UTSA defeats UNT in double OT thriller

BOCA RATON, FLA. – UTSA soccer appeared in and won their first-ever Conference USA tournament match Monday, as they defeated in-state and conference foe North Texas, 1-0.

The game-winning goal was scored by North Texas, who own-goaled in the 107th minute attempting to clear an Anna Sutter cross.

The victory over North Texas is the Roadrunners' second win over the Mean Green this season, as they defeated UNT earlier in the year 1-0. The match was similar to the first meeting against UNT, as neither team was able to find a goal in regulation. This time, however, two overtimes were needed.

The Roadrunners controlled the offensive action during the match, as they outshot the Mean Green 15-7 over the span of 107 minutes. Leading the team in shots was Anna Sutter with four, while both Sarina Russ and Deja Sandoval had three. The Roadrunners limited North Texas to under half their average total shots per game.

The shutout win was Jil Schneider's eighth of the season, which breaks the school record for most shutouts in a single season. Schneider owns a career total of nine shutouts, which is second in school history.

The overtime match was the Roadrunners' seventh of the season, and they own a 3-0-4 record in those seven matches. The win takes UTSA to ten wins on the year, and they currently sit at 10-4-4. The ten wins are tied with the 2008 Roadrunners squad for the second-most wins in a season.

The Roadrunners are now undefeated in their last eight matches and are set for a rematch with Old Dominion (10-4-1). The previous meeting saw the Monarchs win in San Antonio 2-0.

Following their first-ever Conference USA tournament win against North Texas, UTSA will be back in action on Wednesday facing ODU. The match is set to kickoff at 12:30 CT and will be streamed on ESPN+.
