Roadrunners race to season-opening win

SAN ANTONIO -- Jacob Germany had 24 points to lead four UTSA men's basketball standouts in double figures, fueling a 97-66 win over Trinity [Texas] in the season opener for the Roadrunners, on Tuesday night at the Convocation Center.

UTSA (1-0) rolled to a season-opening win over Trinity (1-0) on Tuesday night behind the quartet of double-figure scorers. Germany had 24 points on 10 of 15 shooting in just 19 minutes of action, adding three rebounds and two blocks. 
 
Sophomore guard Jordan Ivy-Curry chipped in 19 points with two assists and two steals in 26 minutes, sinking three 3-pointers in the second half. Newcomer Dhieu Deing had 13 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals and fellow newcomer Darius McNeill had 11 points, six assists, four rebounds and a steal in 28 minutes. 
 
The Roadrunners shot 47.4 percent in the game on 36 of 76 shooting, sinking seven 3-pointers. UTSA limited Trinity to 44.4 percent from the field, owning a 44-37 advantage on rebounds, a 52-38 margin in points in the paint, a 32-11 margin in fast-break points and an 18-6 lead in second-chance points. UTSA owned a 49-30 halftime advantage and outscored TU by 12 in the second half. 
 
UTSA also got six points and a team-leading seven rebounds from Cedrick Alley Jr., who added three assists and two blocks. Lachlan Bofinger had six points, six rebounds and three assists in 15 minutes. 
 
UTSA returns to action on Friday, facing Oklahoma in Norman at 7 p.m. on Bally Sports Oklahoma and Ticket 760 AM. 
 

After Trinity opened the scoring, Deing drilled a transition 3-pointer on a find from McNeill. McNeill evened the game at 4-4 after a free throw and Deing's transition finish at the rim gave UTSA a 6-4 lead. After a TU 3-pointer, Germany finished on the block for an 8-7 lead, with the Tigers owning a 9-8 lead at the first media timeout. 
 
The Roadrunners took a 10-9 lead after Bofinger cleaned up his miss in the paint and after a TU triple, Ivy-Curry sank a righty floater on the baseline. Czumbel drilled a foul-line jumper to answer a Tigers 3-pointer and McNeill's steal and finish in transition gave UTSA a 16-15 lead. Bofinger took the run to 6-0 and an 18-15 lead with an authoritative slam on a run out. 
 
UTSA used a trio of paint buckets to build a 24-18 lead, including a pair from Germany and a finish from Alley. The lead grew to 26-20 on a McNeill steal and slam and Deing answered a TU basket with a wing 3-pointer in transition. 
 
After TU cut the lead to 29-24, UTSA ripped off a 12-2 run, including 10 straight points to own a 41-26 lead. After Phoenix Ford drilled a pair at the line, Deing sank a wing 3-pointer, Ivy-Curry drilled a pair at the charity stripe and Czumbel gave UTSA a double-digit lead with a free throw. Alley took the lead to 13 points with a finish in transition after a Deing steal and Germany forced a TU timeout with a nifty finish in transition.  
 
The Tigers cut the lead to 11 with a pair of baskets before UTSA finished off the half on an 8-0 run to own a 49-30 lead. Germany finished on a drive, Deing sank a pair of free throws, Bofinger finished a layup in the paint on an Alley find and Ivy-Curry drilled a layup. UTSA finished the half shooting 56 percent, including 3 of 12 from 3-point range, while TU shot 42 percent on 13 of 31 shooting. UTSA had 28 of its 49 points in the paint, with a 20-2 margin in fast-break points. 
 
Trinity opened the scoring before Ivy-Curry drilled consecutive 3-pointers to take UTSA's lead to 20 points for the first time and then to 55-32. A Trinity and-1 was answered with a pair of Germany free throws and a Germany finish on a McNeill drive and dish. 
 
A 7-0 Trinity run was answered by Lamin Sabally's and-1 and a bucket from Ford in transition to take the lead to 64-42. Ivy-Curry drilled a corner trey to give UTSA a 67-47 lead, sparking an 8-0 run that saw Germany finish an and-1 and a layup in the paint. After four straight TU points, Germany flushed another and-1 for a 75-51 lead. 
 
Germany upped his point total to 24 with a basket in the paint, McNeill finished an and-1 and Sabally had an offensive rebound and putback for an 82-53 lead. The Roadrunners took the lead over 30 after a pair at the line from Alley with just under eight minutes left.
