SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA volleyball team upended UTEP in a five-set thriller Saturday afternoon on Senior Day.
UTSA was on the board first until UTEP hit a 4-0 run to gain an early lead. The Miners stayed ahead until the Roadrunners hit a 3-0 run to tie things up at 12. UTSA took the lead until the set was tied once again at 15. The Roadrunners finished on a 7-3 run to take the first 25-21.
The Miners opened the second with a 4-1 advantage. UTEP hit multiple scoring runs to stay ahead and tie the match 1-1.
In the third, the teams were tied 2-2 until UTEP hit a 5-0 run to lead 7-2. The Roadrunners then went on a 5-0 run to tie things at seven. The Miners hit multiple scoring surges to gain an advantage. UTSA finished the set on a 4-1 run but it wasn't enough to keep UTEP from claiming the set 25-21.
The battle continued in the fourth as the Roadrunners hit a 5-0 run to gain an 8-4 lead. UTEP then hit a 4-0 run to tie the set at eight. Both teams hit multiple scoring runs as the set was tied 17 times. The Miners went on a 7-4 run to lead 23-20, followed by a 4-0 run from UTSA to regain the lead 25-24. The Roadrunners clinched the set with 6-3 run to force the match to a fifth set.
In the fifth, the teams fought for every point until the final one when Skyeler Embry finished with an ace.
