SAN ANTONIO -- The UTSA men's tennis team wrapped up competition over the weekend at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Texas Regional, competing at Baylor and Texas A&M.
UTSA competed in the three-day event, which began on Thursday with singles qualifying. Miguel Alonso claimed a win over UIW's Marwin Kralemann, saving match point in the second set, before falling to Texas' Evin McDonald. Javier Gonzalez topped SMU's John Zisette, before falling in the three-hour match vs. Rice's Emir Sendogan. Garrett Skelly posted a win over Abilene Christian's Ryan Flanagan before falling vs. SMU's Jordi Redelijk.
In Friday's competition in College Station, Joao Ceolin, ranked No. 66 in singles, beat Luke Casper from Texas A&M with a strong finish, before falling in the round of 32 vs. No. 18 Carlos Aguilar of TCU in a match that was interrupted by a rain delay in the second set, with Ceolin fighting off muscle cramps late in the match. Sebastian Rodriguez fell in a close match vs. Texas A&M's Rahul Dhokia. In a first-round doubles match, Alonso and Maxime Groysman advanced with an 8-3 winner over the pair from UTRGV.
Saturday's event featured three doubles round of 32 matches, including losses from Ceolin and Rodriguez, Gonzalez and Skelly and Alonso and Groysman, who fell to the No. 1 seed from TCU.
In consolation play on Saturday, Groysman went 2-0 with wins over a competitor from UTRGV and Abilene Christian. Rodriguez also went 2-0 in the main draw consolation, topping Nathan Schwartz from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Carlo Izurieta from UTRGV. Alonso fell vs. a foe from UIW in the back draw, Gonzalez topped Campbell Salmon from Rice and Skelly earned a win over Lamar's Max Amling with four saves on match points and wins in the last six points of the tiebreaker.
The Roadrunners will wrap up their 2021 fall tournament schedule with the Rice Hidden Dual in Houston, Texas, Oct. 29-31.
