MONTGOMERY, Texas — Led by top-10 finishes from Christian Fanfelle and Michael Rome, the UTSA men's golf team finished in a tie for fourth place at the Bentwater Intercollegiate, which concluded on Wednesday at Bentwater Country Club's Miller Course (par 71/6,788 yards).
Fanfelle and Rome finished as part of a four-way tie for eighth place at 1-over par among NCAA Division I competitors in the 72-man field. The duo helped the Roadrunners share fourth with South Dakota State.
UTSA posted four-shot improvements in each round, opening with a 294 before carding rounds of 290 and 286 for an 870 total, one shot ahead of South Alabama and five strokes better than Florida Atlantic in the team standings.
After opening with a 79 on Monday, Fanfelle logged two straight sub-70 rounds to move into a share of eighth place at 1-over 214. The all-conference performer from San Antonio had a 68 on the second day and then fired a 4-under 67 on the final day behind four birdies in a bogey-free round. He led UTSA in par-5 scoring (-4) and pars (36).
Rome also turned in his best scorecard of the week on the final day with a 2-under 69 that featured seven birdies, including four as part of a 33 on the back nine. The senior from Austin opened with a 74-71—145 before recording his third sub-70 scorecard of the season to grab a share of eighth.
Jack Wehman ended up in a tie for 22nd at 7-over 220. The freshman from Austin bounced back from a 74-75—149 for the first 36 holes with an even-par 71 on Wednesday on the strength of five birdies, four on the front side.
David Harrison tied for 41st with a 71-76-70—226 and Hunter Bott rounded out the UTSA lineup in 62nd (75-76-86—237).
Competing as an individual, Patrick Kahanek tied for 51st with a 76-77-76—229.
Tournament host Sam Houston won the team title with an 847, followed by Rice (867) and Texas State (869).
The Roadrunners will open their spring season on Feb. 14-15 at the Border Olympics in Laredo.
