Men’s tennis opens fall schedule with pair of tournaments

SAN ANTONIO -- The UTSA men's tennis will open its 2021 fall schedule with a pair of tournaments on Friday-Sunday, with the Roadrunners competing in the Corpus Christi Invitational and the Midland Invitational in Midland, Texas.

UTSA will split its squad to compete in both events to open the fall tournament schedule. The Roadrunners will send a portion of their roster to Corpus Christi to the event hosted by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Friday-Sunday, with the remainder of the roster competing in the Midland Invitational in Midland, Texas on Friday-Sunday.

This will serve as UTSA's first and only tune-up before hosting the UTSA Roadrunner Invitational Sept. 24-26 in San Antonio.

The Roadrunners head in to the season with a bevy of returning talent, including senior Joao Ceolin (Palotina, Brazil), who was ranked No. 66 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association top-125 rankings of singles athletes on Tuesday. Ceolin was one of four Roadrunners who earned All-Conference USA accolades in the spring 2021 season, including graduated senior Juri Reckow, and returning standouts Garrett Skelly (The Woodlands, Texas) and Javier Gonzalez (San Fernando, Chile).

Under the direction of third-year head coach Sergey Avdeyev and assistant coach Cullen Dees, the Roadrunners posted a 13-win season in 2021, including a stretch of six wins in eight matches.
