SAN ANTONIO — Hunter Bott and Michael Rome shared individual medalist honors to lead the UTSA men's golf team to the Lone Star Invitational team title on Tuesday at TPC San Antonio Oaks Course (par 72/7,435 yards).
The Roadrunners entered the final round with a 15-shot advantage and cruised to a 12-stroke victory in the team race ahead of New Mexico State. UTSA carded rounds of 293, 280 and 295 to finish at 4-over-par 868, comfortably ahead of the Aggies (880) in the 13-team field. Louisiana (885), Texas State (889) and Lamar (891) rounded out the top five in the team standings.
Bott and Rome entered the final day tied atop the individual leaderboard and they finished with a share of the crown at even-par 216, one shot in front of New Mexico State's Garrison Smith and Lamar's Pedro Marin, who shared third place at 1-over par. It marked the first collegiate win for each Roadrunner.
Trailing Rome by one shot after a bogey on No. 16, Bott pulled even with his teammate after writing down a three on the 347-yard, par-4 17th hole. It was the third birdie of the day for the junior from Montgomery and he finished the week with 14 circled numbers, tops in the field of 75. After opening with a 73-69—142 on Monday, Bott's 2-over 74 helped secure a share of the individual title.
Rome was steady with seven pars and a birdie through his first eight holes on Tuesday. He held on for a piece of the crown with seven more pars on the back nine en route to a 74, finishing the tournament with 41 pars, the most in the field. The Austin native shot a 75 in the opening round before firing a 5-under 67 on Monday afternoon to move into a share of the lead entering the final round.
UTSA placed four players in the top 10 and all five members of the lineup finished in the top 15, as the Roadrunners secured their second win at their annual home tournament and the first since 2018. It marked the 26th team title in program history and the first since the victory three years ago at TPC San Antonio.
Christian Fanfelle and Jack Wehman finished in a tie for eighth place at 5-over 221. Fanfelle, an all-conference performer from San Antonio posted his second straight 74 on Tuesday after opening with a 73 on Monday morning. Wehman, an Austin native, carded rounds of 75, 70 and 76 in his second event as a Roadrunner.
David Harrison posted the low score of the final round for the Roadrunners with a 1-over 73 that featured a pair of birdies on the back nine. The Trophy Club native finished in a tie for 13th at 7-over 223 (72-78-73).
Competing as individuals, Reed Foster tied for 37th (78-70-82—230), Carson Gallaher shared 43rd (73-77-82—232) and Patrick Kahanek finished 53rd (77-79-78—234).
The Roadrunners will return to action on Oct. 4-6 at the Trinity Forest Invitational in Dallas.
