SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA volleyball team travels to Oxford, Miss. Sept 3-4 for the Ole Miss Invitational. The Roadrunners fill face Ole Miss and Northwestern State on Friday and Coastal Carolina on Saturday.
Scouting UTSA
UTSA comes into the weekend 0-2 after facing No. 20 San Diego and No. 1 Texas last weekend in Austin. The Roadrunners dropped a 3-1 decision to the Toreros on Saturday. UTSA was able to take the first set (25-11), but lost the final three (25-19, 25-13, 25-15). On Sunday, the Longhorns swept the Roadrunners 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-15) in a hard fought battle.
Freshman Mekaila Aupiu made her Roadrunner debut, posting 29 assists, seven digs and three aces to lead the team. Senior Hannah Lopez led the way in attacks with 57 and 14 kills.
Scouting Ole Miss
Ole Miss enters the weekend 2-0 after sweeping Troy and UAB Aug. 27-28 at the Troy Preseason Tournament.
Payton Brgoch leads the Rebels in kills with 16, while Sam Burgio has 20 digs on the season so far.
Friday's matchup with be the first time the two teams are meeting.
Scouting Northwestern State
Northwestern State is 1-3 on the season. The Lady Demons opened the 2021 campaign at the Tulane Invite where they played Tulane (L, 2-3), Cal (L, 0-3) and Alabama A&M (W, 3-0). NSU played UL-Monroe on Aug. 31 and lost 3-1.
UTSA leads the series 30-3. The last time the teams plated each other was Oct. 27, 2011 and the Roadrunners swept the Lady Demons.
Scouting Coastal Carolina
Coastal Carolina comes into the weekend with a 1-1 overall record. The Chanticleers lost to Duke 3-2 on Aug. 27, followed by a sweep of Iowa on Aug. 28 to open the season.
Ani Bozdeva leads the team with 79 attacks and 29 kills. On the defensive side, Lina Perugini has 46 digs on the season so far.
Saturday's match will be just the second time in program history the two teams will face each other. The only time the two squads saw action against each other was Aug. 25, 2017 when CCU won 3-2.
