SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA volleyball team captured a 3-1 win over Sam Houston in an exhibition match on Saturday at the Convocation Center.
The Roadrunners won the first three (25-17, 25-20, 25-17) to take the match, followed by a bonus set the Bearkats won (25-17).
Set One
The teams battled it out in the first set as it was tied five times before UTSA hit a 5-0 run to lead 15-9. Both teams hit short scoring runs to close out the set as the Roadrunners won 25-17.
Set Two
UTSA opened with a 3-0 run to take an early lead. The Bearkats came back and scored a few points to close the gap to one (5-4) and the match continued to stay within one point until Sam Houston tied it at 10. A 3-0 run helped the Roadrunners regain the lead until another tie and the Bearkats took over with a 16-14 lad. UTSA rallied back to clinch the set 25-20.
Set Three
The third set started off tight and remained a close race until the Roadrunners hit a 3-0 run to lead 17-13. The Bearcats scored three-consecutive points to close the gap, but UTSA hit a 4-0 run at the end to take the set 25-17.
Set Four
The Roadrunners started the fourth set with a 3-0 run, but Sam Houston hit a 7-0 to take the lead for the remainder of the set. UTSA hit a 5-0 to trail 18-13, but it wasn't enough as the Bearkats claimed the set 25-17.
The Roadrunners officially open the 2021 season Aug. 28 against San Diego in Austin. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
