UTSA hires Mary Janiga as assistant coach

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA head coach Summer Batiste on Monday announced that she has hired Mary Janiga as assistant women's golf coach.

"We're thrilled to have Mary Janiga join our staff at UTSA," said Batiste, a two-time Conference USA Coach of the Year. "With her success at the division one level as a player, the immediate impact she's made at Northwood and her passion for developing student-athletes, we look forward to having her join our family as we continue to chase excellence."

"I am excited and thankful for the opportunity that Coach Batiste has given me," Janiga said. "She has created such a strong foundation and a professional atmosphere for these young women. I am so excited about the direction the UTSA program is headed. The ladies have had such a great summer so far and I am looking forward to working with each of them, as well as Coach Batiste."

Janiga comes to San Antonio from Northwood, an NCAA Division II school located in Midland, Michigan, where she was an assistant coach for the men's and women's golf programs for two seasons. During her tenure, the Timberwolves combined to collect 12 all-conference certificates and record 11 top-five finishes, including a semifinal appearance at the 2021 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference Women's Golf Championship. The Northwood women also set school records for 18-, 36- and 54-hole totals, while the men logged the best 54-hole total in program annals during her time on the staff.

While at Northwood, Janiga helped mentor Sydni Harding to back-to-back all-conference team selections, all-region honors and a 24th-place finish at the 2021 NCAA Division II Women's Golf Championships. Harding also broke the program record for scoring average in 2020-21.

Janiga also coached former Northwood standout Cam Lippoldt, who earned first-team all-conference accolades and broke the men's 54-hole school record in 2019-20.

A former standout collegiate golfer at Mercer, Janiga was a two-time All-Southern Conference performer for the Bears. She ranked 10th in the league in scoring average as a senior at 75.29, and she averaged 75.5 over the span of 90 rounds during her career. A 2017 U.S. Women's Amateur Championship qualifier, she landed on the All-SoCon Freshman Team in 2016 and also garnered Academic All-SoCon honors.

A native of Wellington, Florida, Janiga was a three-time Palm Beach County Player of the Year while at American Heritage High School. A two time team captain, she averaged 72.0 in 2014 while registering two holes-in-one. Her junior career was highlighted by a win at the 2015 Optimist International Junior Championship.
