UTSA golfers enjoy success on summer circuit

SAN ANTONIO — On the heels of the UTSA men's golf program's first NCAA postseason appearance in May, several Roadrunners have enjoyed success on the course this summer.

Three Roadrunners have qualified for the 51st Higginbotham Texas State Open, which will be held on July 27-30 at The Cascades Club in Tyler.

A pair of Roadrunners earned a spot in the tournament after finishing in the top five at a qualifier at Barton Creek's Palmer Lakeside Course on July 6. Michael Rome, a rising senior from Austin, fired a 3-under-par 68 to finish in sole possession of fourth place, while former all-conference selection Sean Meehan won a playoff against fellow former Roadrunner Isaac Idstein to secure the fifth and final qualifying spot after both players carded a 1-under 70.

David Harrison also will compete in the Texas State Open after tying for fifth place at a qualifier held on June 15 at Bridlewood Golf Club in Flower Mound. The rising junior recorded a 3-under 69 to make the field.

Meanwhile, UTSA earned a runner-up finish in the Magnolia Amateur on July 9-10 at Hattiesburg (Miss.) Country Club after a pair of Roadrunners finished in the top 20. Adam House, who recently wrapped up his UTSA career this spring, tied for fifth place with a 5-under 137 after firing rounds of 69 and 68. Harrison settled into a share of 20th at 1-under 141, as he bounced back from a 74 with a 4-under 67 in the final round. That duo's combined score of 6-under matched Mississippi and South Alabama for the top team scores, but the Rebels won the tiebreaker with the lowest overall individual finish from Kyle Meeks' third-place showing.

Former UTSA golfer Mitchell Griffin won the Firecracker Open on July 2-4 at Lions Municipal in Austin. He posted a 12-under 201 for a two-shot victory in the field of more than 100 players. After opening with a 70, Griffin registered rounds of 63 and 68 to secure the title.

Four Roadrunners — current players Hunter Bott and Christian Fanfelle and former standouts Collin Clark and Chad Sewell — competed in the 117th Trans-Mississippi Amateur Championship at Windsong Farm Golf Club in Independence, Minn. Fanfelle, a second-team all-conference performer in 2021, led the quartet by firing a 148 (73-75) to just miss the cut.

House and Bott also wrapped up play in the 119th Southern Amateur Championship last week at Old Waverly Golf club in West Point, Miss. House carded a 4-under 280 (72-67-72-69), while Bott missed the cut.
