SAN ANTONIO —UTSA senior Maia Campbell will travel to Eugene, Ore., this week to compete in the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships hosted by Oregon at Hayward Field.
Campbell earned a spot in the national meet with a top-12 finish in the women's shot put at the NCAA West Preliminary Round on May 27 in College Station. She will line up in the second of two flights of the final round, which is slated to begin at 7:40 p.m. Central time on Thursday.
Campbell is in line to become the first female Roadrunner to garner All-America honors in a throwing event as one of 24 competitors in the shot put after finishing 11th with a mark of 16.74 meters (54-11.25) in the preliminary round. The senior from Converse Judson High School ranks 15th in the nation with her school-record heave of 17.33m (56-10.25) posted in winning the C-USA Outdoor crown on May 16.
A three-time conference medalist, Campbell has climbed to the top of the program's record book in both the indoor and outdoor shot put over the last two years. She claimed the 2020 C-USA Indoor crown with a school-record 16.12m (52-10.75) measurement, shattering the previous mark by more than one meter. She eclipsed the outdoor record in April with a 15.77m (51-9) runner-up effort at the Texas A&M Team Invitational and then improved that standard to 15.95m (52-4) at the Roadrunner Invitational before smashing it at the conference meet.
UTSA boasts 12 All-Americans who have combined to collect 24 certificates on the women's side, including 15 outdoors. Whitney Flannel was the last outdoor All-American for the program after earning second-team accolades in the high jump in 2015, while Danielle Spence was a second-team performer in the 2019 NCAA Indoor triple jump.
Jack Turner also earned an NCAA Outdoor berth in the men's decathlon after a record-setting performance at the Conference USA Outdoor Championships on May 13-14 in Murfreesboro, Tenn., but the freshman from England will not be able to compete this week due to injury.
