ORLANDO, Fla. — UTSA's Celeste Loughman, Chase Keng and Ana Gonzalez have been named to the 2020-21 Academic Momentum Award Teams as announced this week by the Scholar Baller program in conjunction with the Institute for Sport & Social Justice (ISSJ).
Loughman, a standout for the softball team the past five seasons, was one of 27 student-athletes from across the country selected for the Academic Momentum Award First Team. The West Columbia, Texas, native finished her career with two school records, in triples and stolen bases, and ranks in the top 10 in multiple categories at UTSA. In the 2021 season, she posted a .312 batting average with 32 runs, 43 hits, six doubles, four triples and six homers. She led the team with 11 stolen bases, earned 31 walks and recorded a .441 on base percentage. Loughman closed out her career with a .335 batting average, along with 21 home runs and 95 RBIs.
Keng, a four-year letterwinner for the baseball program, was one of 18 named to the second team. A native of Deer Park, Texas, Keng has had a career season in 2021 for the Roadrunners. After missing the first three weeks, he has emerged as one of the top power hitters in Conference USA, slugging seven homers with 30 RBI over 33 games as a junior. He has hit .287 with a pair of triples and three doubles. Over his career, Keng has slugged 10 homers and driven in 57 runs, hitting for a .269 average over 129 games.
Gonzalez, a four-time all-conference performer for the women's golf team, was one of 23 chosen for the third team. UTSA's career scoring average leader (73.85), the Monterrey, Mexico, native helped lead the Roadrunners to their third straight NCAA postseason appearance at the Louisville Regional earlier this month. The 2019 Conference USA individual champion and 2018 C-USA Freshman of the Year is a C-USA Academic Medal recipient and Commissioner's Honor Roll member.
All three honorees earned their degree earlier this month.
Top nominations were categorized into three teams based on each student-athlete's academic improvement and the impact each student-athlete's academic performance had on his or her classmates, teammates, academic advisors and professors.
Established in 1995, the Scholar Baller® movement evolved in response to concerns that the student-athlete's athletics role increasingly superseded the student role. Well before the Name Image and Likeness (NIL) movement, Scholar-Baller in 2004 made history as the first organization to brand educational logos (ThinkMan® and ThinkWoman®) on NCAA and NAIA student-athlete jerseys, helmets, and uniforms during athletic competition. In order to address this issue, the founding members of Scholar Baller® developed a groundbreaking program to bridge the gap between education and sport utilizing student-athletes' passion for entertainment and athletics. As a result, the Scholar Baller® program continues to produce unprecedented outcomes in student retention, academic achievement, and career development. This is in part due to the organization's culturally relevant representation(s) of student-athlete academic performance outcomes through imagery and language. Other schools and conferences have imitated the Scholar Baller educational and "graduation stamp" of success on the jerseys and helmets.
Each award recipient will receive an official Academic Momentum Award certificate. First Team Academic Momentum Award recipients also will receive a limited edition ThinkMan® or ThinkWoman® trophy. Second Team Academic Momentum Award recipients will also receive a limited edition ThinkMan® and ThinkWoman® cardholder and a keychain.
