MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Sam Healy and Ingeborg Gruenwald collected silver medals to lead a combined seven top-eight finishers in the long jump competitions, headlining Saturday action for UTSA at the Conference USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Dean A. Hayes Track & Soccer Stadium.
Healy's runner-up showing paced a quartet of Roadrunners that finished in the top eight, as the men tallied 20 points in the long jump. The senior from Ireland leaped to a distance of 7.59 meters (24-11) for second place, just ahead of freshman teammate Jack Turner, who measured 7.47m (24-6.25) for the bronze one day after wrapping up a gold-medal performance in the decathlon.
Christie Le Roux just missed a spot on the podium with a fourth-place jump of 7.42m (24-4.25) and Joel McFarlane, the decathlon silver medalist, placed eighth with a mark of 7.07m (23-2.5).
Gruenwald collected the the fourth conference medal of her young career with a career-best long jump, helping the Roadrunners score 16 points in the event. The freshman from Austria touched the sand at a distance of 6.36m (20-10.5) for the silver and the 2021 C-USA Indoor champion now ranks as UTSA's No. 2 all-time performer behind school record-holder Tameka Roberts (6.66m).
Oreoluwa Adamson picked up her first C-USA medal by earning the bronze with a leap of 6.17m (20-3), while Sigrid Kleive was seventh with a mark of 6.00m (19-8.25).
In the team standings, the UTSA men are in third place with 45 points behind defending champion Charlotte (60) and Rice (53). The women have tallied 33 points and are in third place behind Rice (62.5) and Charlotte (49).
In other finals action, Lacee Barnes placed seventh in the women's discus with a throw of 45.26m (148-6).
For the men, Grant Szalek cleared 2.04m (6-8.25) for seventh in the high jump and Idol Ramon scratched a point with an eighth-place time of 9:08.06 in the 3,000m steeplechase, which makes him the No. 5 performer in the event in program history.
Saturday's action on the track was highlighted by a majority of the preliminary races, and UTSA earned 11 spots in Sunday's finals, eight for the women and three for the men.
Four Roadrunners advanced in the women's 400m hurdles, as school record-holder Faith Roberson (1:00.13) and No. 2 all-time performer Alanah Yukich (1:00.80) each won their heat while Mackenzie Grimes (1:02.58) and Maren Wilms (1:03.00) also moved on to Sunday.
Yukich and Roberson also qualified for the 100m hurdles final with times of 13.93 and 14.11, respectively, while finishing 1-2 in their preliminary heat.
Taylor Armstrong crossed the finish line first in her heat of the 200m with a personal-best 24.20 clocking to advance to Sunday's final.
Abby Balli, the reigning conference mile silver medalist, will race in the 1,500m final after posting a PR time of 4:35.50.
As one of the favorites in the men's 110m hurdles, Bashiru Abdullahi secured a spot in Sunday's finale by cruising to a 13.99 clocking to win his preliminary heat.
Andrew Pirog stayed alive in the 400m hurdles by posting the third-fastest time, a 51.99 that was good for second in his heat.
Kaleb Campbell sped to a wind-legal personal-best time of 10.73 to grab the final qualifying spot in the men's 100m.
In other action on the track, Brooke Lomax circled the oval twice for a career-best 2:12.84 clocking in the women's 800m, while Logan Masters posted a wind-legal PR of 21.77 in the men's 200m.
The final day of the C-USA Outdoor will get underway with field events starting at 1 p.m. and running events at 4 p.m.
