HOUSTON — The No. 26-ranked UTSA men's golf team is in fifth place after the opening day of the Bayou City Collegiate Classic, which got underway Monday at Westwood Golf Club (par 72/7,184 yards).
The Roadrunners opened the 36-hole day with an 8-under-par 280 before posting a 294 in the afternoon, and they sit at 2-under 574, three shots ahead of No. 42 Arkansas State and seven strokes in front of host Rice (+5).
Individually, Hunter Bott is in a tie for 17th at 1-under 143. The sophomore from Montgomery started his week by matching his UTSA career-low round with a 3-under 69 that featured six birdies, four as part of a 2-under 34 on the front side. He turned in a 74 behind three more birdies in the second round and is just three shots out of the top 10.
Defending individual champion Collin Clark is one shot back and in a tie for 25th at even par. The senior from Mansfield wrote down an eagle on the 328-yard, par-4 fifth hole and a pair of birdies en route to a 2-under 70 on Monday morning before registering his second eagle of the day with a 3 on the 584-yard, par-5 12th and back-to-back birdies on Nos. 17-18 as part of a 74 in the second round.
Michael Rome is tied for 35th at 1-over 145. The Austin Westlake High School product bounced back from a 74 with a 1-under 71 that included a trio of birdies.
Christian Fanfelle and Chad Sewell are part of a tie for 41st at 2-over 146. Fanfelle opened with a 1-under 71 before posting a 75 in round two, while Sewell carded a 2-under 70 followed by a 76.
Sam Houston leads the 17-team field at 20-under 556, followed by Florida Atlantic (560), No. 49 Houston (562) and Louisiana (564).
William Holcomb of Sam Houston and Enrique Dimayuga of Florida Atlantic are tied for the individual lead at 8-under.
The final round is set for Tuesday.
