SAN ANTONIO – For the first time in program history, the UTSA soccer team defeated UTEP 2-1 Monday night on senior day at Park West Athletics Complex.
The Roadrunners scored early with a goal in the 10th minute. Ellis Patterson shot from the right side of the goal, but the keeper dove for the ball and kept her from scoring until Abby Kassal got a foot on the loose ball and found the net to lead 1-0.
Just after kickoff in the second half, UTSA earned a penalty kick in the 47th minute. Abby Kassal took the kick, slipped the ball past the keeper and found the bottom left corner of the goal as the Roadrunners led 2-0.
In the 73rd minute, the Miners scored to close the gap to one (2-1).
UTSA recorded 11 shots on the day with Ellis Patterson leading the team with five.
Jil Schneider played all 90 minutes in the net with two saves.
After the game, UTSA recognized three seniors, Tara Giesen, Bella Keane and Gabby Crenshaw.
The Roadrunners return to action on Friday when they take on North Texas in Denton for the final game of the regular season.
