DADE CITY, Fla. — Led by top-10 finishes from Camryn Carreon and Hannah Holzmann, the No. 49-ranked UTSA women's golf team placed fourth at the Conference USA Championship, which wrapped up on Wednesday at La Jovita Golf & Country Club (par 72/6,267 yards).
Carreon tied for seventh place at 1-over-par 217 and Holzmann was one shot back with a share of ninth to lead the Roadrunners to their 13th straight top-four conference finish. In fact, UTSA has placed fourth or better in all but its first two league tournaments in the 16-year history of the program, including winning four titles with the final two coming in the 2018 and '19 C-USA Championships after last year's event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
UTSA carded rounds of 295, 290 and 292 to finish at 13-over 877, just two shots out of a tie for runner-up between Middle Tennessee and WKU and 10 strokes in front of Old Dominion, which was fifth in the 11-team race won by No. 33 North Texas (863) behind individual champion Audrey Tan (-9).
Carreon paced the Roadrunners in her first career conference event, sharing seventh place in the 56-person field with Sophie Burks of Middle Tennessee. The sophomore from San Antonio opened the 54-hole event with a 71-72—143 before posting a 74 in the final round behind six birdies, including four on the front nine. She ended up with a tournament-best 14 birdies for the week and played the par fives at a combined 4-under par.
Holzmann led UTSA in the final round with a 1-under 71 on the strength of five birdies after carding a 74-73—147 for the first 36 holes. The junior from San Antonio was third overall with a team-high 39 pars with 10 logged on Wednesday, seven as part of a 2-under 34 on the back nine. The tie for ninth at 2-over 218 marked the top conference finish and league score of her UTSA career, bettering a tie for 13th with a 219 two years ago.
Nicole Polivchak finished in a tie for 12th place after registering a 4-over 220 while competing in her first C-USA Championship. Playing near her hometown of Sarasota, the senior fired an even-par 72 that featured four birdies, including a pair as part of a 2-under 34 on the back nine, after opening with a 75-73—148.
Ana Gonzalez also placed in the top 20, ending up with a share of 17th at 6-over 222. The three-time all-conference performer and 2019 C-USA individual medalist posted a pair of 75s sandwiched around an even-par 72 in the second round.
Katia Mexsen rounded out the UTSA lineup in a tie for 42nd with a 232 (79-77-76). The Torreon, Mexico, native ended her first career conference tournament with her best round of the week, a 76 that was headlined by two birdies.
