DALLAS — For the third time this year, UTSA sophomore Bashiru Abdullahi has been named Conference USA Male Track Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday.
Abdullahi raced to a wind-aided time of 13.61 seconds in cruising to victory in the men's 110-meter hurdles at the Roadrunner Invitational last Saturday. His second win in as many races this outdoor season also marked the fastest time recorded under any conditions in school and meet history, bettering Keyunta Hayes' UTSA standard of 13.67 established in 2012 and the Roadrunner Invitational mark of 13.91 set by UTSA's Patrick Prince in 2017.
The two-time conference indoor medalist in the 60m hurdles improved his previous season best of 13.84 posted in winning the Invitational section at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in March and he currently tops the C-USA list in the event by more than three-tenths of a second. The Benin City, Nigeria, native's time would rank 10th nationally if it was wind legal, while his 13.84 does stand 11th on the NCAA West Preliminary Round qualifying list.
Abdullahi now has collected five career C-USA Athlete of the Week awards, as he was a two-time winner in each of the past two indoor campaigns. This also marks the eighth time this year that a Roadrunner has earned the conference's weekly award. Chante Dixon and Ingeborg Gruenwald each received the honor during the indoor season, while Faith Roberson (twice) and Andrew Pirog have been tabbed C-USA Track Athlete of the Week outdoors.
The Roadrunners will be back in action this Saturday, April 24, at the J. Fred Duckett Twilight hosted by Rice in Houston.
