UTSA makes up ground on second day of C-USA Championship

DADE CITY, Fla. — The No. 49-ranked UTSA women's golf team made up ground in the race for the league title on the second day of the Conference USA Championship on Tuesday at La Jovita Golf & Country Club (par 72/6,267 yards).

After the second round was suspended Monday evening with the 11-team field at the halfway point, the two-time defending champion Roadrunners remain in fourth place but fired a 2-over 290 — the second-best score of the day — for the second 18 holes to close the gap from 21 shots to nine behind round-two leader WKU, which sits at even-par 576. UTSA is sitting at 9-over 585, five strokes out of a tie for second between Middle Tennessee and No. 33 North Texas and 11 shots in front of Southern Miss.

Camryn Carreon continues to lead the UTSA lineup, as the sophomore is in sixth place at 1-under 143 through 36 holes. The San Antonio native followed her opening-round 71 with an even-par 72 that featured a 4-under 32 on the back nine on the strength of four birdies. She is six shots off the pace of 7-under set by Old Dominion's Jana Melichova.

Ana Gonzalez matched Carreon with the team's low scorecard in the second round, firing a 72 that was headlined by a trio of birdies, including back-to-back on Nos. 14-15. The senior from Mexico and defending individual champion is in a tie for 15th at 3-over 147, as she logged a three-shot improvement from her first round.

Hannah Holzmann also has a share of 15th place after using 15 pars and a birdie on the 333-yard, par-4 third hole to record a 1-over 73 in the second round. The junior from San Antonio, who leads all players with 29 pars through 36 holes, also birdied that same hole as part of a 74 in the opening round.

Nicole Polivchak is one shot behind that tandem in a tie for 19th at 4-over 148. Playing not far from her hometown of Sarasota, the senior bounced back from a 75 in the opening round with a 1-over 73 behind three birdies.

Katia Mexsen is in a tie for 45th at 12-over after posting a 79 in the first round followed by a 77 that was highlighted by a birdie on the 518-yard, par-5 13th hole.

The final round is set for Wednesday. UTSA will be paired with Southern Miss and ODU and teeing off from No. 1 starting at 7 a.m. CT.
