BRYAN, Texas — The UTSA men's golf team is in a tie for 10th place in a tight team race after the opening day of the Aggie Invitational, which got underway on Friday at Traditions Club (par 72/7,227 yards).
Collin Clark, Christian Fanfelle and Michael Rome all fired a 2-over-par 74 to help the No. 33 Roadrunners card a 300, good for a share of 10th with Rice and only two shots out of a three-way tie for seventh between No 25 Texas Tech, No. 37 Baylor and Nebraska in the 17-team field that features eight nationally ranked squads. In fact, UTSA is just five strokes behind 46th-ranked Houston for fifth place in the team standings paced by fifth-ranked Texas (283).
That trio of Roadrunners is in a tie for 21st place, two shots out of a tie for 12th and eight off the pace set by Texas' Pierceson Coody, who fired a 6-under 66.
Clark wrote down birdies on the 354-yard, par-4 sixth, the 551-yard par-5 15th and the 190-yard, par-3 16th holes in his first of three rounds.
Fanfelle also registered three birdies, which came on the 584-yard, par-5 eighth, the 182-yard, par-3 11th and 439-yard, par-4 14th holes.
Rome recorded all three of his birdies as part of a 2-under 34 on the front nine, as he circled his number on the second, sixth and ninth holes.
Chad Sewell and Hunter Bott round out the UTSA lineup in 62nd (78) and 81st (81), respectively.
Playing as an individual, Adam House also posted a 2-over 74 that featured four birdies and is part of the 14-way tie for 21st.
The second round is slated for Saturday.
