Roadrunners split games at Cowgirl Classic II

LAKE CHARLES, La. – The UTSA softball team went 1-1 Friday afternoon on day one of the Cowgirl Classic II.
 
Game one: Texas Southern
The Roadrunners started the day with a 2-1 victory over Texas Southern.
 
TSU was on the board first with a solo home run in the top of the second.
 
Riley Grunberg tied the game with a solo homer to left center in the bottom of the fourth.
 
In the bottom of the fifth, Erykah Guerrero hit her first career home run to left field to take the lead, 2-1.
 
In the final two innings, the Lady Tigers left one on as UTSA held onto the lead.
 
TSU left seven runners on base as the Roadrunners allowed just one run. UTSA posted four hits with doubles from Kat Ibarra and Taylor Medina.
 
Tatum Seith pitched all seven inning with seven strikeouts.
 
Game two: McNeese State
UTSA dropped a tough 6-5 decision to McNeese State Friday evening.
 
The Cowgirls were got on the board early with three runs in the first.
 
McNeese added another run in the third to lead 4-0.
 
In the fourth, the Cowgirls scored two more runs to extend the lead to six.
 
The Roadrunners scored four runs in the top of the fifth. Julia Bumford earned a walk with one out on the board. Kat Ibarra also earned a walk as Bumford reached scoring position. Celeste Loughman followed with a walk to load the bases. With two outs, Riley Grunberg knocked the ball out of the park for a grand slam and to close the gap to two, 6-4.
 
In the top of the sixth, Kindell Brooks hit a solo homer to center field as the Roadrunners trailed 6-5.
 
Grunberg earned a walk in the seventh, but couldn't reach home as the Cowgirls took the win.
 
Clarissa Hernandez pitched 3.2 innings with three strikeouts. Marena Estell closed out the last 2.1 innings with a strikeout and just one hit.
 
The Roadrunners are back in action tomorrow to face Texas Southern and McNeese for the final day of the Cowgirl Classic II.
