SAN ANTONIO — The second to last day of a golf tournament is known as "moving day" and the UTSA men's golf team made the most of it by posting the low team round of the tournament to vault up seven spots and into fifth place after the second day of the Cabo Collegiate at TPC San Antonio.
Christian Fanfelle fired a 3-under-par 69 and Chad Sewell carded a 2-under 70 on the 7,034-yard, par-72 Oaks Course layout on Tuesday to help the Roadrunners race up the leaderboard after two rounds of the 54-hole tournament. UTSA turned in a 2-under 286, one shot better than Florida State's 287 from today and Oklahoma's 1-under opening round, for the best team round of the event.
The Roadrunners are in fifth place at 19-over 595, one shot ahead of No. 10 Texas and three strokes in front of a three-way tie between No. 8 Oklahoma State, No. 27 Baylor and No. 31 Arkansas. UTSA sits just three shots behind third-ranked Arizona State in the 16-team field that includes 12 nationally ranked squads and is led by No. 7 Oklahoma (582).
Fanfelle's second-round 69 is tied for the second-best scorecard of the tournament through the first two days and it featured five birdies, including three as part of a 2-under 34 on the back nine. The junior all-conference performer from San Antonio has moved into a four-way share of ninth place in the 88-player field at 2-over 146, five strokes off the 3-under pace set by Florida State's Vincent Norman, the 17th-ranked player in the nation. Fanfelle is tied with a pair of other nationally ranked golfers, including 20th-ranked Julian Perico of Arkansas, and he is ahead of 11 other players who also rank in the top 100.
Sewell wrote down four birdies en route to posting a 70 on Tuesday. The senior from Conroe vaulted into a tie for 13th place at 3-over 147 along with six other players, including No. 52 and reigning Golfweek College Player of the Week Dan Erickson of Texas A&M.
Sewell and Fanfelle both have recorded eight birdies through the first 36 holes, which is the second-best total in the field behind Oklahoma State's Bo Jin's nine. The individual medalist will receive an automatic exemption to play in this year's Valero Texas Open on April 1-4 on this same course.
Michael Rome turned in the third-best round of the day for the Roadrunners with a 1-over 73. The redshirt junior from Austin registered a trio of birdies on the back nine to help him log a seven-shot improvement from his opening round and move into a tie for 44th (+9).
Hunter Bott also logged a marked improvement from his first round by posting a 2-over 74 on the strength of 14 pars and a birdie on the 215-yard, par-3 12th hole. The sophomore from Montgomery is tied for 50th (+10) with one round remaining.
Collin Clark closes out the UTSA lineup in a tie for 61st (75-81—156).
The final round is scheduled for Wednesday and the Roadrunners will tee off from No. 1 beginning at 8 a.m. Spectators are allowed and admission is free.
