ARGYLE, Texas — The UTSA women's golf team is in 13th place after the opening day of The Bruzzy, which teed off on Sunday at Lantana Golf Club (par 72/6,241 yards).
The Roadrunners opened the 54-hole tournament with an 11-over-par 299 and followed that with a 298 in the afternoon to settle into 13th, six strokes ahead of SMU and only six shots behind a tie between Kansas State and Missouri in the field that includes nine nationally ranked teams.
Ana Gonzalez leads the UTSA lineup after carding a 6-over 150, good for a tie for 51st place. The senior from Mexico opened with an even-par 72 that was highlighted by four birdies before turning in a 78 in the afternoon round.
Camryn Carreon and Katia Mexsen are one shot behind their teammate with a share of 57th at 7-over 151. Carreon logged three birdies in each of her rounds, posting a 1-over 73 in the morning and a 78 in round two. Mexsen bounced back from an opening 78 with a 73 that featured an eagle on the 519-yard, par-5 seventh hole and a birdie on the 342-yard, par-4 ninth.
Hannah Holzmann is tied for 63rd at 9-over 153 after firing a 76 and a 77, while Nicole Polivchak is 67th at 10-over 154 that included the Roadrunners' low round of the day, a 2-under 70 in the afternoon behind four birdies and an eagle on No. 7.
Seventh-ranked Oklahoma State has the 36-hole lead in the team race at 19-under behind individual leader Lianna Bailey (-9).
The final round is scheduled for an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start on Monday.
