AUSTIN – The UTSA softball team went 1-1 Friday afternoon on day one of the Bevo Classic.
Game One: South Dakota
The Roadrunners started the day with a 5-2 victory over South Dakota.
The Roadrunners were first on the board in the second scoring four runs in the second. Marena Estell singled and Kindell Brooks reached on a fielder's choice. Victoria Villarreal reached on an error as Brooks advanced to second. With two outs, Kat Ibarra tripled to score Villarreal and Brooks as UTSA led 2-0. Celeste Loughman singled up the middle as Ibarra reached home (3-0). Riley Grunberg was hit by a pitch, followed by a single from Brittany Coe to score Loughman. A ground out closed the inning as the Roadrunners led 4-0. The Coyotes scored a run in the bottom of the frame.
UTSA scored another run in the fourth. Loughman tripled to right center, followed by Grunberg with a single to center field and Loughman scored.
USD scored a another run in the fifth to trail 5-2.
Clarissa Hernandez pitched all seven innings as the Roadrunners recorded 11 hits.
Game Two: UT Arlington
The Roadrunners fell to UT Arlington 12-1 in a five inning run-rule game.
The Mavericks were on the board early with three runs on two hits in the first inning.
UTA added another run in the second to lead 4-0.
At the bottom of the fourth, Grunberg hit a home run down the left line to put UTSA on the board.
In the fifth, the Mavericks scored eight runs on five hits to force the run rule.
Four pitchers made an appearance for UTSA. Marena Estell started, pitching 2.0 innings, while Tatum Seith (2.1), Jamie Gilbert (0.1) and Makenzie Carpenter (0.1) followed.
The Roadrunners are back in action tomorrow in Austin when they take on Texas (1:30 p.m.) and South Dakota (7 p.m.).
