AUSTIN — Ingeborg Gruenwald and Christie Le Roux posted top-three finishes in the horizontal jumps to lead the way for the UTSA track & field teams on Friday at the 93rd Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
Gruenwald earned a second-place finish in the 'B' section of the women's long jump on a windy afternoon on the UT campus. The 2021 Conference USA Indoor champion touched the sand at a distance of 6.19 meters (20-3.75) despite a 2.8 meters-per-second headwind on her fourth attempt of the day to briefly take the lead before Texas Tech's Virginia Kerley measured 6.20m (20-4.25) on her sixth and final trip down the runway for the narrow win by one centimeter.
Meanwhile, Le Roux scored a third-place finish in the 'B' section of the men's long jump. The freshman from South Africa leaped to a distance of 7.42m (24-4.25) on his fourth jump of the afternoon to move into the top two and he held on for third with that season-best effort, which bettered his previous collegiate PR of 7.23m (23-8.75) set last week at the UTSA Invitational.
Grant Szalek added to the strong showing by the Roadrunners in the jumps with a sixth-place showing in the men's high jump. The three-time conference medalist from Perth, Australia, cleared 2.02m (6-7.5) on his second try and then sailed over the bar at 2.07m (6-9.5) on his second jump to finish sixth and improve his outdoor season best by one centimeter.
In other field-event action, Jorge Ayala placed 10th in the 'B' section of the men's shot put with a mark of 15.37m (50-5.25).
The meet will conclude on Saturday and live coverage on Longhorn Network is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
