Roadrunners fall to Roos in extra inning

STILLWATER, Okla. - The UTSA softball team dropped a 13-8 decision to Kansas City on Sunday on the last day of the Mizuno Classic.
 
In the first, Riley Grunberg singled to put UTSA on base. Brittany Coe stepped to the plate and hit a home run to left field scoring Grunberg to take a lead 2-0.
 
In the third, Kansas City scored three runs from a homer to gain a 3-2 advantage.
 
At the bottom of the fourth, Victoria Villarreal singled. Lourdes Bacon stepped in to pitch run for Villarreal, stealing second and advancing to third on a wild pitch. A single from Kat Ibarra advanced Bacon to score a run and tie the game, 3-3.
 
In the fifth, the Roos scored another run to lead once again (4-3). Coe answered with her second home run of the day to tie the game back up, 4-4.
 
Kansas City scored another run in the sixth to lead 5-4. In the bottom of the frame, Marena Estell singled to lead off. Loughman singled to right field to score a run for UTSA and tie the game for the third time (5-5).
 
In the eighth, the Roos scored eight runs off six hits to take an eight-run lead (13-5). The Roadrunners tried to rally back in the bottom of the frame. Coerver earned a walk and Ibarra reached on a fielder's choice. With two outs, Celeste Loughman singled up the middle. Riley Grunberg homered to score Loughman and Ibarra as UTSA trailed 13-8. A popup closed out the game.
 
Each team recorded 10 hits on the day with Brittany Coe leading the team with four.
 
Clarissa Hernandez started in the circle, pitching 2.1 innings with six strikeouts. Alexa Williams (1.2), Tatum Seith (3.1) and Jamie Gilbert (0.2) also made an appearance against the Roos.
 
The Roadrunners are back in action March 26-28 at the Bevo Classic in Austin.
