Kleive takes down javelin record on Friday at UTSA Invitational

SAN ANTONIO — Sigrid Kleive broke the school record in the women's javelin throw to highlight Friday action for the Roadrunners at the UTSA Invitational at Park West Athletics Complex.

Kleive's record-setting performance headlined a solid day for the UTSA throwers, who logged a total of eight top-eight finishes, five by the women.

Making her outdoor debut for the Roadrunners, Kleive unleashed a mark of 45.51 meters (149-4) on her second throw of the evening to secure second place and beat the previous UTSA record of 44.87m (147-2) established by Angel Sifuentes in 2016. A native of Aalesund, Norway, she also eclipsed the previous mark with a 45.49m effort on her final attempt in her first javelin competition as a Roadrunner.

Meanwhile, Maia Campbell turned in a pair of top-eight showings for the UTSA women. The senior from Converse Judson finished third in the shot put with a measurement of 14.93m (48-11.75). That mark is just shy of moving her up one spot to fourth place on UTSA's all-time performers list in the outdoor shot put. Campbell also placed seventh in the hammer throw with a heave of 49.97m (163-11).

Maren Wilms posted a fourth-place finish with 4,701 points in the heptathlon, moving up one spot on the final day. The Melsbach, Germany, native entered Friday in fifth with a 2,753 tally through the first four disciplines. She opened the second day by posting 726 points in the long jump after leaping to a mark of 5.59m (18-4.25) before tossing the javelin to a distance of 28.67m (94-1). Wilms then closed the seven-event competition with a time of 2:23.93, good for second in the 800m and 771 points.

Amaya Scott registered a fifth-place showing in the javelin with a throw of 38.47m (126-2), while Lacee Barnes notched a sixth-place finish in the shot put with a mark of 13.91m (45-7.75).

Justin Wright placed fifth in the javelin with a throw of 44.93m (147-5), while Angel Robles and Jorge Ayala finished seventh (15.34m/50-4) and eighth (15.34m/50-4), respectively, in the shot put for the men.

On the track, Jake Smith shattered his personal best in the final race of the night. The Yuma, Ariz., native clocked a 15:01.91 to finish fourth in the 5,000m, improving his previous PR of 15:43.86 by more than 40 seconds.

Omar Bekdache also recorded a sixth-place finish with a time of 10:31.84 in the 3,000m steeplechase.

Saturday's action will get underway with field events starting at 11 a.m. and running events at 2 p.m. No spectators are allowed at the meet due to COVID-19 protocols.
