SAN ANTONIO – Courtney Walters turned in a double-double to pace UTSA volleyball to a four-set win (25-14, 25-16, 21-25, 25-22) over Southern Miss, on Sunday afternoon at the Convocation Center.
UTSA (6-9, 4-5 Conference USA) pulled closer to earning a spot in the C-USA Championships, which will be hosted by Southern Miss and take the top four teams from each division. The Roadrunners entered the match trailing Southern Miss (8-6, 3-4 C-USA) for the fourth spot in the Western Division.
The Roadrunners cruised to wins in the first two sets, before Southern Miss came out strong to take seven of the first nine points in the third. UTSA used a 3-0 run late to cut the lead to 20-15 in the third – and again at 21-20 – but the Golden Eagles were able to hold off the charge for a third-set win.
Walters, a product of McKinney Boyd High School, had 47 assists, 12 digs, three blocks, two aces and two kills.
A native of Flower Mound, Texas, Jessica Langridge turned in an efficient outing for the Roadrunners in the middle. She finished with 10 kills on 15 swings.
UTSA also got a season-best 18 kills from Hannah Lopez, who added seven digs and three aces. Kirby Smith finished with 11 kills and 12 digs.
Libero Mia Ybarra had 13 digs, four assists and three aces.
UTSA finished the match hitting .234, holding USM to a .129 percentage.
The series will conclude on Monday at 12 p.m. on CUSA TV.
