SAN ANTONIO — Collin Clark is in a tie for 21st place and the UTSA men's golf team is in 12th after the opening day of the Cabo Collegiate at TPC San Antonio, which got underway Monday on the Oaks Course (par 72/7,034 yards).
Battling windy and chilly weather conditions, Clark fired a 3-over-par 75 and is part of a 12-way deadlock for 21st that includes the fifth-ranked player in the country in David Puig of Arizona State, as well as 20th-ranked Julian Perico of Arkansas. The senior from Mansfield wrote down an eagle on the 337-yard, par-4 17th hole — one of eight eagles on the day — and he also birdied the 553-yard, par-5 14th to headline his first round. He is only two shots out of the top 10 and currently sits in front of seven top-100 golfers in the 88-man field.
Clark's 75 helped the Roadrunners card a 309, good for 12th in the 16-team field that features 12 nationally ranked squads, including nine in the top 25 and six that appear in the top 10. UTSA is three shots ahead of No. 24 Houston and sits 15 strokes in front of 30th-ranked Stanford. The Roadrunners trail No. 21 Texas Tech by three and top-ranked Arizona by only four shots.
Christian Fanfelle and Chad Sewell are in a share of 39th place at 5-over-par. Fanfelle's opening-round 77 was highlighted by a trio of birdies, while Sewell also turned in a 77 behind four birdies, the second-highest total in the field.
Hunter Bott and Michael Rome round out the UTSA lineup in a tie for 67th (+8).
No. 7 Oklahoma leads the team standings after posting a 1-under 287 on the strength of individual leader Patrick Welch's 3-under 69. No 15 Texas A&M is second (297), followed by No. 4 Florida State and 10th-ranked Texas in a tie for third (298).
The second of three rounds is slated for Tuesday. UTSA players will tee off on No. 10 beginning at 9 a.m.
