SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA men's golf team will feel right at home this week, as the Roadrunners will face one of the top fields in the country on Monday-Wednesday, March 1-3, in the Cabo Collegiate at TPC San Antonio.
Typically held in Mexico, the 11th annual Cabo Collegiate has moved to TPC San Antonio's Oaks Course (par 72/7,034 yards — which is UTSA's home course and also the site of the annual PGA TOUR's Valero Texas Open — due to international travel restrictions currently in place.
The Roadrunners will compete against arguably the toughest field in any tournament in collegiate golf this season, one that features 12 top-50 teams, including nine top-25 squads, six that currently rank in the top 10. UTSA, which is 64th in the latest Golfstat rankings, will face No. 1 Arizona, No. 3 Arizona State, No. 4 Florida State, No. 7 Oklahoma, No. 8 Oklahoma State, No. 10 Texas, No. 15 Texas A&M, No. 21 Texas Tech, No. 23 Houston, No. 27 Baylor, No. 30 Stanford, No. 31 and host Arkansas, Abilene Christian, California and Rice.
The field will play 18 holes each day with tee times of Nos. 1 & 10 beginning at 8 a.m. each day. Admission is free and spectators are allowed but encouraged to maintain social distancing at all times.
The individual winner will receive an exemption to compete in this year's Valero Texas Open, which is scheduled for March 29-April 4 on the Oaks Course.
The Roadrunners will line up with Chad Sewell, Christian Fanfelle, Hunter Bott, Collin Clark and Michael Rome, who all helped UTSA to a sixth-place showing in last week's season opener at the Border Olympics. Sewell tied for 15th after firing a 4-over-par 220 (75-71-74) on the par-72 Laredo Country Club layout. Fanfelle shared 25th place after posting a 78-74-71—223 to help the Roadrunners card an 888 and finish ahead of a pair of ranked teams in No. 13 Baylor and 43rd-ranked Kent State.
