LAREDO, Texas — Chad Sewell is tied for 11th place and the UTSA men's golf team is in sixth after opening-day action at the Border Olympics on Monday at Laredo Country Club (par 72/7,375 yards).
The second round was suspended due to darkness with most teams through 16 of 18 holes. The 18-team field will resume the second round on Tuesday morning followed immediately by the final round.
Sewell is in a tie for 11th place at 1-over-par to help the Roadrunners stay in contention for a top-five finish. UTSA currently sits in sixth place at 15-over, three shots ahead of No. 43 Kent State and four strokes in front of 13th-ranked Baylor and only three shots behind Illinois State for fifth. The Roadrunners carded a 10-over 298 in the first round and are 5-over for the first 16 holes of the second round.
Sewell opened the 54-hole event with a 3-over 75 that was highlighted by a pair of birdies on the back nine. The Conroe native has vaulted up the leaderboard in the second round, as he written down four birdies and is 2-under through 16 holes.
Collin Clark paced the Roadrunners in the first round with a 1-under 71 that featured four birdies, three as part of a 35 on the back. The Mansfield native is currently 7-over through 16 holes in his second round and in a tie for 33rd at 6-over for the tournament.
Hunter Bott and Christian Fanfelle are one shot behind their senior teammate in a share of 41st at 7-over.
Bott has rebounded from an 80 in the first round, as the sophomore from Montgomery is 1-under through 16 holes thanks to five birdies and an eagle on the 557-yard, par-5 17th.
After opening with a 78, Fanfelle, a third-team all-conference performer last season, has logged a trio of birdies to help him stand at 1-over through 16 holes.
Michael Rome rounds out the UTSA lineup in a tie for 76th (+13). The Austin native carded a 2-over 74 that included a pair of birdies in the first round.
No. 26 Texas A&M holds the day-one lead at 4-over, followed by ninth-ranked Texas (+6), Houston (+7) and Sam Houston State (+8).
Sam Bennett of Texas A&M and Hunter Ostrom of Texas share the individual lead at 4-under.
