Roadrunners fall at UTEP in El Paso on Tuesday

EL PASO, Texas – The UTSA volleyball team fell in three sets (17-25, 22-25, 23-25) at UTEP on Tuesday afternoon at Memorial Gym. 
 
UTSA (3-7, 1-3 Conference USA) fell at UTEP (3-4, 3-1 C-USA) in the second of a two-match swing through El Paso on Monday and Tuesday. The Miners claimed the opener in four sets. 
 
Tied at nine, the Miners used a 5-0 run – featuring three service aces from Ava Palm – to claim the opening set, 25-17. 
 
UTSA and UTEP were even at seven in the second set, when the clubs traded 5-0 runs. The Roadrunners rallied to take a 16-15 lead in the second before the Miners were able to rally back for a 25-22 win. 
 
The third set saw UTEP notch the first five points of the game with UTSA rallying back to cut the lead to one at 15-14, 19-18 and 24-23, but the Miners got the game-winning kill from Serena Patterson for the 25-23 result. 
 
UTSA was led by a 10-kill effort from Hunter Coppola, who hit .304, and nine kills and two blocks from Bianca Ejesieme, who hit .412. 
 
Junior Kirby Smith had seven kills and two digs. 
 
Sophomore setter Courtney Walters, a native of McKinney, Texas, had 25 assists and four digs. 
 
A native of San Antonio, junior libero Mia Ybarra had a team-leading 10 digs. 
 
UTSA hit .207 as a team in the loss, owning an advantage in blocks, 6-4. The Miners finished with a .303 hitting percentage and rode a career=high six aces from Palm to an 11-ace outing as a team.
