Roadrunners fall short in battle at North Texas

DENTON, Texas – Three Roadrunners scored in double digits as North Texas won a battle for the ball, 85-78, Friday night at The Super Pit.
 
The Roadrunners started off strong with a 6-0 run, including back-to-back steals from Mikayla Woods. UTSA kept the Mean Green from scoring until the 6:12 mark and then a battle for the ball commenced until UNT hit a 7-2 run in the last two minutes to take the lead, 15-14.
 
In the second, North Texas had an 8-2 run to push the lead to seven (16-23). For the remainder of the quarter, both teams found the basket as the Mean Green led 35-30 at the half.
 
Coming out of the locker room, both teams continued to battle it out until Karrington Donald hit a 3-pointer with 8:52 remaining. The Roadrunners posted a 7-4 run by the 7:44 mark to remain within two points (37-39). Emilie Baek made a 3-pointer to bring UTSA within one (40-41). Woods drew a foul and made both free throws to take back the lead (42-41) with 6:03 remaining. In the final minutes, UNT hit a 15-3 run to lead 58-48 at the end of the third.
 
The battle continued in the fourth. Both teams hit short scoring runs until the final three minutes when the Roadrunners hit a 14-5 run to trail by three (78-81). With just a minute remaining, the Mean Green scored four points off free throws to maintain the lead and garner the win.
