SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA women's tennis team battled it out against Houston, but fell 5-2 Saturday afternoon at the UTSA Tennis Center.
"We came out strong with a lot of energy, winning the doubles," head coach Ki Kroll said. "Overall, we're moving in the right direction and competing better each match."
The Roadrunners started off strong winning the doubles point. At No. 3, Alexandra Weir and Catalina Cabrique defeated their opponent 6-3 to take the first match. Jasmin Starr and Keegan McCain took down their opponent with a 6-4 win at No. 1 to garner the doubles point.
The Cougars took a 2-1 lead after wins at No. 2 and 5. Aleksandra Zlatarova won the lone singles point for UTSA with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 2. Starr fell at No. 1, 6-7, 3-6, as Houston led 3-2.
The final two points of the match were close as both went to three sets. Houston clinched the match as McCain dropped a 5-7, 7-6, 1-6 decision at No. 6. The final point for the Cougars came after Weir fell, 6-7, 6-3, 6-0 at No. 4.
The Roadrunners return to action Feb. 5-7 when they travel to Las Vegas to face Youngstown State, Florida Atlantic and UNLV, respectively.
