EL PASO, Texas – After splitting its opening weekend – despite missing several players due to COVID-19 protocols – and having its two-game week canceled, UTSA volleyball will hit the court for its first home match of the 2020-21 season, playing host to UIW on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Convocation Center.
UTSA (1-1) will face off with UIW (0-1) in the home opener for the Roadrunners. UTSA split a pair in Corpus Christi, Texas, over the weekend, taking down UTRGV in five sets before falling to host Texas A&M-Corpus Christ in four sets.
The Cardinals opened their 2020-21 season at Prairie View A&M last Friday, falling in five sets.
The Roadrunners hit .248 as a team on opening weekend, with 12.4 assists, 1.7 aces, 17.4 digs and 1.1 blocks per set. UTSA was led offensively by a strong opening weekend from junior Hannah Lopez, who had 3.33 kills per set, hitting .234 on opening weekend with 3.89 digs per set.
UTSA also got a strong outing from sophomore setter Courtney Walters, who averaged 10.44 assists per set, chipping in 2.78 digs per outing with 1.22 kills per set. UTSA also got 30 points on opening weekend from Hunter Coppola, who had 1.89 kills per set.
Freshmen Alicia Coppedge and Maddie Thayer each made their collegiate debuts over opening weekend. Freshman Amanda Ifeayni starred over the weekend, totaling 3.67 kills per set, hitting .482, with a total of 34.5 points accumulated.
