Justin Anderson inks free-agent deal with Rangers

SAN ANTONIO – UTSA baseball great Justin Anderson has inked a minor league free agent contract with the Texas Rangers that includes an invitation to Spring Training, it was announced.

Anderson, a native of Houston, was a two-way weapon for the Roadrunners from 2012-14, which saw UTSA play in three different conferences, claiming the 2013 Western Athletic Conference title.

A 14th round pick in the 2014 MLB Draft by the Los Angeles Angels, Anderson made his debut with the Angles after four years in the minor leagues. He starred in the bullpen for Los Angeles in 2019, going 3-0 in 54 games, with 60 strikeouts in 55.1 innings, allowing only 42 hits.

Over his three-year UTSA career, Anderson pitched in 35 games with 26 starts. His best season came in 2014 when he went 4-5 with a 2.92 ERA in 17 games and 13 starts. He also logged 108 at-bats in 2012 as a freshman at UTSA, with a .324 average, seven doubles, 15 RBI and five steals.

Anderson is one of four pitchers the Rangers have offered non-roster invites to Spring Training, including former top prospect Jharel Cotton, Drew Anderson and Edubray Ramos.

After his breakout debut, Anderson has been recovering from Tommy John Surgery, held in the summer of 2019.
