Ligon collects C-USA Defensive Player of the Week accolades

DALLAS — The weekly awards continue to roll in for UTSA as freshman linebacker Jamal Ligon has been named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.

Ligon is the fourth Roadrunner to win a C-USA weekly award through the first three games this season, which already matches the most UTSA has earned in a single year (2014). He joins previous C-USA Offensive Players of the Week Frank Harris (9/21) and Sincere McCormick (9/14) and C-USA Special Teams Player of the Week Hunter Duplessis (9/14) as weekly honorees.

A native of Tyler, Texas, Ligon broke the program's single-game tackles record with 19 stops in the 37-35 home win over Middle Tennessee in the league opener for both teams on Sept. 25 at the Alamodome. He registered eight solo stops and 1.5 sacks as part of his record-setting tackles total to go along with a pair of quarterback hurries, as UTSA improved to 3-0 for the first time since 2017. Making his second straight start, Ligon's 19 tackles eclipsed the previous program standard of 16 set in 2011 by Cody Rogers and it marks the most tackles made by an FBS player in a game this season.

On the season, Ligon has posted 25 total tackles, including 12 solo tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks, as well as a pair of quarterback hurries and one fumble recovery.

The Roadrunners will hit the road to face UAB on Saturday, Oct. 3, in Birmingham, Ala. Kickoff is set for 11:30 a.m. at Legion Field and the game will air on Stadium (check local listings) and Ticket 760 in the San Antonio area.
