House slips past Adams to win Greater San Antonio Men’s Match Play Championship

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA senior Adam House rallied from a four-hole deficit to sophomore teammate Will Adams to win the 18th Greater San Antonio Men's Match Play Championship in an all-Roadrunner final by a 2-up count on Sunday at the Golf Club of Texas (par 72/7,137 yards).

Adams, a sophomore from Odessa, won four of the first seven holes, including tapping in for birdie on the 439-yard, par-4 seventh, to race out to a 4-up advantage.

House, a Rockwall native, made par on each of the next two holes to cut the deficit in half heading to the back nine. After the two Roadrunners halved the next three holes, House moved to within one on No. 13 and then birdied the 360-yard, par-4 14th to send the match to all square.

Both players wrote down par on No. 15 before House posted a birdie on the 16th to go 1-up.

The two Roadrunners halved the 17th, but House clinched the match in dramatic fashion by chipping in for eagle on the 534-yard, par-5 18th.

House's victory capped a three-day tournament that featured a heavy UTSA presence. A total of six Roadrunners — Hunter Bott, Collin Clark, Christian Fanfelle, David Harrison, Adams and House — advanced out of stroke play and into the first round of match play on Friday.

On Saturday, Adams (6 & 4), Bott (7 & 6), Harrison (6 & 5) and House (6 & 5) all moved on to the round of 16. Adams then posted a 4 & 2 win and House held off freshman teammate Bott 2-up to move into Sunday's semifinals.

On the final morning, Adams turned in a convincing 5 & 4 triumph to secure his spot in the final match, while House advanced with a 2 & 1 decision.

House is the third Roadrunner to win the Greater San Antonio Men's Match Play Championship, joining John Elizondo (2006) and Phillip Hui (2008).
