Sebastian Rodriguez tabbed C-USA Freshman of the Year

SAN ANTONIO -- A pair of UTSA men's tennis standouts – Juri Reckow and Sebastian Rodriguez – earned All-Conference USA honors in a voting of the league's coaches, with Rodriguez earning C-USA Freshman of the Year, it was announced on Tuesday afternoon.

Sebastian Rodriguez (Trujillo, Peru) was tabbed as the Freshman of the Year and second-team all-conference, and Reckow (Hamburg, Germany) earned first-team accolades after posting an unbeaten singles season.

"We are very proud and happy these guys have received Conference USA recognition," UTSA head coach Sergey Avdeyev said. "Juri worked so hard on and off the court to get to where he is. He went 9-0 in our shortened season and is deserving of the honor. Sebastian is an extremely talented freshman and the sky is the limit for this guy. I am sure he is going to work extra hard this summer and will come back even stronger next year."

Sebastian Rodriguez, whose brother Javier earned all-league honors last year, is the first UTSA player awarded conference freshman of the year since Rodrigo Morgado in 2007. Only four players in program history have been named league freshman of the year. Sebastian Rodriguez ranked second on the team with six single points and had a 3-0 record in the No. 1 spot in the lineup. He formed a pair of doubles teams, combining for a 7-3 record, including a 6-3 mark with freshman Joao Alcantra. He went 6-1 during the month of February with just a lone loss at No. 5 Texas.

Reckow is the 37th player in program history to earn first-team all-conference accolades. He was 9-0 in his 10 singles matches, going 4-0 in the No. 2 spot and 5-0 in the No. 3 spot in the lineup. He was named C-USA Player of the Week after a 3-0 stretch that saw him earn a win over his singles match at fifth-ranked Texas.
