Barber homers in Roadrunners loss

ARLINGTON, Texas – Taylor Barber homered and Kyle Sonduck had his best outing on the mound but it wasn't enough as UTSA dropped a 9-5 decision to UT Arlington at Clay Gould Ballpark Saturday.

After allowing a season-high 13 runs and 12 hits in the series-opener Friday, the Roadrunners (10-5) handed the ball to Shane Daughety. In three previous starts this season, he allowed just 1 run in 18.1 innings but the Mavericks tagged him for eight runs on eight hits and two walks in 2.1 innings.

Sonduck came on in the fifth inning with his team behind 9-5 and snuffed out UTA's offense, facing one batter over the minimum in 3.0 innings of work. He controlled the tempo and commanded the strike zone, allowing just one single.

Falling behind 8-0 after three innings, UTSA answered with five runs over the next two frames, erasing the deficit to four at the halfway point.

Bryan Sturges reached on an infield single and scooted home when Griffin Paxton drilled a double just inches inside of third base and down into the corner. A Mavericks miscue allowed Paxton to score and Jonathan Tapia to reach safely in front of Taylor Barber, who blasted the 2-0 offering over the barrier in left.

A sacrifice fly by Sturges, plating Ryan Bishop in the fifth as the Roadrunners crept closer but failed to accumulate any runs.

UTA added a run in the bottom of the fifth.
