SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA men's basketball team will conclude its regular-season schedule on Saturday, playing host to Marshall at 3 p.m. at the Convocation Center.
The game will be televised live on Stadium, with Noah Coslov (play-by-play) and Tim Scarbrough (analyst) calling the action. Fans can also hear the game live on the Roadrunners Sports Network, with the Voice of UTSA, Andy Everett (play-by-play) and Tim Carter (analyst) calling the action live on Ticket 760 AM and goUTSA.com.
UTSA (13-17, 7-10 Conference USA) concludes its C-USA Bonus Play schedule with a rematch of a Feb. 13 win over Marshall at the Convocation Center. The Roadrunners have clinched a berth in the Air Force Reserve Conference USA Championships, next week at The Star in Frisco, with seeding left to be determined.
The Roadrunners are coming off an 84-59 loss at the defending league champion Old Dominion on Wednesday in Norfolk. UTSA and ODU went to half tied at 31 but the Monarchs scored 53 in the second half, fueled by a 19-0 run, to solidify the game, owning a 51-19 margin in points in the paint.
UTSA has been led in 2019-20 by junior guards Jhivvan Jackson and Keaton Wallace. The nation's No. 2 scoring duo has combined to score 45.5 points per game. Jackson, a native of Bayamon, Puerto Rico, ranks second in the nation with 26.9 points per game, while grabbing 5.6 rebounds per outing. Jackson ranks just behind Marquette senior guard Markus Howard, who paces the nation with 27.7 points per game.
Wallace, a product of Dallas' Richardson High School, averages 18.6 points and 4.7 rebounds per game.
Jackson has set a bevy of records during his junior season, including the single-season marks for points and field goals, and the career records for points, field goals and 3-pointers. He eclipsed the 2,000-point milestone on Wednesday, becoming the sixth player in league history to reach the 2,000-point club.
UTSA has gotten 6.8 points and 2.9 rebounds per game from junior Luka Barisic, with freshman Jacob Germany chipping in 5.1 points and 4.4 rebounds per game. Junior guard Knox Hellums averages 5.1 points and 2.1 rebounds per game, while freshman Erik Czumbel averages 4.2 points and 1.9 rebounds per game.
Senior forward Byron Frohnen made history on Wednesday at ODU, playing in his program-record 130th game. Frohnen, a native of Las Vegas, has started each game of his career and owns UTSA records for games played, games started and career rebounds. As a senior, Frohnen ranks sixth in C-USA with 6.9 rebounds per game, adding 3.6 points per outing.
The Roadrunners have averaged 77.2 points per game as a team in 2019-20, with 39.1 rebounds, 12.5 assists, 12.9 turnovers, 5.9 steals and 2.7 blocks per game. UTSA has shot 42 percent from the field and 34.7 percent from range, with opponents shooting 43.8 percent from the field and 33.9 percent from distance.
Marshall (15-15, 9-8 C-USA) comes into the matchup with UTSA fresh off a 94-82 win over Florida Atlantic in Huntington on Wednesday. The Thundering Herd have won three of their last four games after the setback at UTSA on Feb. 13. Marshall is averaging 75.4 points, 38.3 rebounds, 13.8 assists, 15.0 turnovers, 8.3 steals and 6.0 blocks per game as a team. The Herd is shooting 44.2 percent from the field and 31.4 percent from distance, with foes shooting 40.6 percent from the field and 32.4 percent from 3-point range.
UTSA leads the all-time series with Marshall, 5-3 and have won two straight meetings after the win in San Antonio on Feb. 13. UTSA is 4-1 all-time against Marshall in San Antonio.
In the meeting on Feb. 13, UTSA posted a 72-63 win in a game that saw the Roadrunners turn in a strong defensive effort. Marshall held a 38-34 lead at halftime but missed 20 of its first 21 shots to open the second half, with UTSA outscoring the Herd 38-25 in the final period. UTSA shot just 33.3 percent from the field and was 6 of 28 from distance but held Marshall to 30 percent from the field and 3 of 26 from 3-point range. The Roadrunners had the second-most rebounds of any team in college basketball in the win, grabbing 67 boards and holding Marshall to 44. Jhivvan Jackson had 25 points and 10 rebounds, while Keaton Wallace had 13 points and five boards. Atem Bior grabbed 10 rebounds and added nine points in 16 minutes. Luka Barisic had nine points and five boards. Jarrod West had a double-double for Marshall with 15 points and 10 rebounds, with Taevion Kinsey owning 27 points and five boards in the full 40 minutes.
