NORFOLK, Va. -- Jhivvan Jackson broke the single-season record for field goals and eclipsed the 2,000-point milestone butOld Dominion used a 19-0 second-half run to erase a halftime tie and post an 84-59 win over UTSA men's basketball, on Wednesday night at Chartway Arena.
UTSA (13-17, 7-10 Conference USA) and ODU (13-17, 9-8 C-USA) went to halftime tied at 31 but the Monarchs used a 16-2 run to build a double-figure lead in the opening minutes of the final half, later going on a 19-0 run to clinch the win, taking their lead to a 27.
Jackson, a junior out of Bayamon, Puerto Rico, was held to 14 points with two assists. He broke the UTSA single-season record for field goals made and became the sixth player in league history to eclipse the 2,000-career point milestone. Jackson also owns the program record for career and single-season points, and the career and single-season records for 3-pointers.
A product of Dallas' Richardson High School, Wallace had 18 points, three rebounds and three assists.
Senior forward Byron Frohnen set the program record for games played, suiting up in his 130th outing. He has made all 130 starts in his career – a UTSA record – and also owns the career mark for rebounds.
Freshman center Jacob Germany chipped in his fourth double-figure scoring effort of the year, going for 10 points and eight rebounds.
ODU was led by A.J. Oliver II, who had 20 points and 12 rebounds to lead five Monarchs in double figures. Aaron Caver grabbed a game-best 14 rebounds. Malik Curry (13), Xavier Green (17), Joe Reece (13) and Kalu Ezipke (10) joined Oliver in double digits.
The Monarchs dominated in the battle of the boards, owning a 48-31 advantage. ODU finished the game shooting 40 percent from the field with UTSA held to 33 percent.
UTSA will return to action on Saturday, playing host to Marshall at 3 p.m. at the Convocation Center. The game will be televised live on Stadium, with Noah Coslov (play-by-play) and Tim Scarbrough (analyst) calling the game. It will also be broadcast live on the Roadrunners Sports Network, with the Voice of UTSA, Andy Everett (play-by-play) and Tim Carter (analyst) calling the action. UTSA took a 7-4 lead into the first media timeout, getting a deep triple from Wallace, a basket in the paint from Adrian Rodriguez and a pair at the free-throw line from Frohnen. After ODU scored eight of the next 10 points to take a five-point lead, Atem Bior found a streaking Frohnen at the rim for the layup to cut the lead to 14-11 at the second media break.
The lead changed hands or the game was tied 10 more times before the next media break, with UTSA getting triples from Jackson and Wallace during the stretch, trailing 27-25 with 4:48 left. The Monarchs took the lead to 31-25 – their largest of the half – before UTSA mounted a 6-0 run to even the game at 31 at the half.
The Monarchs scored 14 of the first 23 points to open the half, building a 45-39 lead at the first media break. The Monarchs grew the lead to 56-41 on the strength of a 16-2 run and ballooned to 66-41 with nine minutes left after a 19-0 run. UTSA missed 15 of its first 20 shots to open the half as the Monarchs made 15 of their first 23 efforts to open the period, including four triples.
