Roadrunners travel to Norfolk to face Old Dominion

  • UTSA to face ODU in rematch of overtime thriller on Feb. 6.

 SAN ANTONIO – Coming off a thrilling win over UAB on Sunday at the Convocation Center, UTSA men's basketball will hit the road for its final road game of the 2019-20 season, traveling to face the defending league champions, Old Dominion, on Wednesday at 6 p.m. CT at Chartway Arena. 
 
The game will be televised live on ESPN3 and will also be broadcast live on the Roadrunners Sports Network, with the Voice of UTSA, Andy Everett, calling the action. Fans can hear the game live on Ticket 760-AM and online at goUTSA.com. 
 
UTSA (13-16, 7-9 Conference USA) will be face Old Dominion (12-17, 8-8 C-USA) in a rematch of an instant classic, played on Feb. 6 in Norfolk. UTSA posted a 85-81 win over the Monarchs in overtime as Jhivvan Jackson poured in 45 points, the third-most in C-USA single-game history. UTSA held a monster first-half lead and the Monarchs rallied to force overtime, before Jackson clinched the win with a pair of overtime triples. 
 
The Roadrunners are fresh off a 66-59 comeback win over UAB on Sunday in San Antonio. Trailing by nine with 4:53 left in the game, UTSA closed on a 20-2 run to clip the Blazers, getting 16 points during the stretch from Jackson. He scored 14 of UTSA's 16-0 run to take the lead, giving him 28 points on the game. 
 
UTSA has been led in 2019-20 by Jackson, the nation's No. 2 scorer, who averages 27.3 points per game, just shy of the NCAA leader, Markus Howard of Marquette at 27.6 points per game. Jackson has scored 30 or more 11 times, has 20 or more in 27 of 29 games and has scored 40 or more twice as a junior. The program record holder for career points, field goals and 3-pointers, and the single-season points mark, Jackson needs just four made field goals to surpass Derrick Gervin's single-season record for made buckets. 
 
Jackson is joined in the backcourt by the dynamic guard Keaton Wallace, who averages 18.7 points and 4.7 rebounds per game. The pair combined to average 46 points per game, second-best in the nation behind only the scoring punch of Hampton's duo of Ben Stanley and Jermaine Marrow (46.8 points per game). Wallace, who averaged 20.2 points per game, is coming off an outing where he had 18 points, nine rebounds and five assists vs. UAB. 
 
Junior forward Luka Barisic, who had a career-high tying seven rebounds on Sunday, averages 6.9 points and 3.0 rebounds per game. Junior guard Knox Hellums sports 5.3 points and 2.1 rebounds per game, while freshman center Jacob Germany – who has made seven straight starts – averages 5.0 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. Freshman point guard Erik Czumbel averages 4.2 points and 1.8 rebounds per game. Senior forward Atem Bior chips in 4.1 points and 4.1 rebounds.
 
Senior forward Byron Frohnen enters the game having made 129 consecutive starts to open his career. Frohnen is tied with Nick Allen with 129 career games played and will pass the UTSA great for the program record on Wednesday. Frohnen, who owns the program record for career rebounds, also set the UTSA mark for career starts. He averages 7.1 rebounds per game – sixth in the league – and averages 3.6 points per game. 
 
As a team, UTSA averages 77.8 points per game, 39.4 rebounds, 12.6 assists, 12.9 turnovers, 5.9 steals and 2.8 blocks per game. UTSA is shooting 42.3 percent as a team, including 34.6 percent from 3-point range, holding opponents to 43.6 percent from the field and 33.9 percent from range. 
 
Old Dominion (12-7, 8-8 C-USA) comes into the game after an overtime win over FAU on Sunday, 85-80. The Monarchs have won three of their last five games, including wins over UTEP and Rice. The Monarchs, built on a physical, stingy defense, score 65.3 points per game, and allow only 65.6 points. ODU is shooting 40.2 percent from the field as a team and 29 percent from range, holding foes to 40.5 percent and 33.1 percent from 3-point distance. ODU is averaging 39.3 rebounds, 10.4 assists, 12.1 turnovers, 6.9 steals and 2.9 blocks per game as a team. 
 
The Monarchs have been led by the scoring punch of Malik Curry, who averages 13.4 points and 3.1 rebounds per game. Xavier Green is one of four Monarchs in double figures, averaging 12.6 points and 4.4 rebounds per game. A.J. Oliver II averages 11.1 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. Jason Wade averages 10.9 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. Aaron Carver averages 4.6 points and 10.3 rebounds per game, leading the league. 
 
UTSA leads the all-time series with ODU, 5-4 and have won two of five meetings vs. the Monarchs in Norfolk, Va. The Roadrunners claimed an 85-81 overtime win in the last meeting in Norfolk on Feb. 6. UTSA has won two of the last three meetings in the series. 
 
In the first meeting of the year between the two schools, UTSA built a monster lead at halftime, 44-27 behind a 25-point outburst from Jhivvan Jackson. ODU responded to outscore UTSA 44-27 in the second half and force overtime, with UTSA getting a grind-it-out performance from Keaton Wallace to push the game into extra time. UTSA outscored ODU 14-10 in overtime to post the four-point win. Jackson had 46 points on 17 of 33 from the field and 8 of 18 from 3-point range, shooting only four free throws. Wallace chipped in 21 points and six rebounds, including five triples. Malik Curry had 30 points, with A.J. Oliver II owning 20 points and Aaron Carver grabbing 20 rebounds.
