UTSA runs away with Maryb S. Kauth Invitational crown

SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA women's golf team collected its second team title of the spring by winning the Maryb S. Kauth Invitational in convincing fashion on Wednesday at San Antonio Country Club (par 72/6,159 yards).

Led by Camryn Carreon and Hannah Holzmann, who finished two-three in the individual standings, the Roadrunners posted a 54-hole total of 886 to finish 23 shots ahead of runner-up Old Dominion (909) at their annual home tournament.

"I am really proud of the way we competed throughout all three rounds," said third-year head coach Summer Batiste, who now has led UTSA to six tournament titles. "It's always an amazing feeling to win, but it was even sweeter to do it at home in front of our fans. This will help us build more momentum as we continue to prepare for our upcoming tournaments this spring."

UTSA entered the final round with a 12-stroke advantage ahead of Texas State. Following a one-hour fog delay to the start of the round, the Roadrunners carded a 300, which extended their lead to 20-plus in securing the 14th team crown in the 15-year history of the program. Texas State placed third with a 910, one shot ahead of UIW (911) in the nine-team field.

Carreon and Holzmann were two of three UTSA players to finish in the top 10 and all five members of the lineup ended up in the top 16 of the 48-person field.

Carreon posted the top finish of her young collegiate career by posting an even-par 216. The freshman from San Antonio opened with a 73-70—143 on Monday before closing out her top 54-hole score as a collegian with a 73. She finished with 13 birdies, the top tally in the event, and ended up only three shots behind individual medalist Jana Melichova of Old Dominion.

Meanwhile, Holzmann turned in her second top-three finish of the spring with a third-place showing. Playing in her hometown, the sophomore and 2020 Texas State Invitational medalist carded a 5-over-par 221 that was capped by a 73 after she opened with a pair of 74s on Monday. She finished with 12 birdies, including six on her final scorecard.

Ana Gonzalez moved into a tie for 10th with a final-round 75 on Wednesday. The junior from Mexico finished with a 225, as she carded rounds of 73 and 77 on the first day.

Nicole Polivchak finished in sole possession of 15th with a 227 (72-76-79), while Madison Kidd carded a 228 (75-74-79) to place 16th, the top finish of her senior season.

Katia Mexsen tied for 24th — a season-best finish — with a 234 (79-77-78) while playing as an individual.

The Roadrunners will return to action on March 30-31 at The Bruzzy in Argyle, Texas.
