Roadrunners atop leaderboard after first day of Maryb S. Kauth Invitational

SAN ANTONIO — With all five players in the lineup in the top 15, the UTSA women's golf team has built a 12-shot lead after the first day of the Maryb S. Kauth Invitational, which got underway Tuesday at San Antonio Country Club (par 72/6,159 yards).
 
Paced by Camryn Carreon, who is in second place in the individual standings, the Roadrunners carded rounds of 292 and 294 and they sit at 10-over par (586). UTSA is 12 strokes in front of Texas State (586) with 18 holes left to play on Wednesday. UIW (605), Old Dominion (605), Houston Baptist (611), Middle Tennessee (611), ULM (622), Belmont (634) and Wichita State (645) close out the nine-team field.
 
Carreon is in contention for medalist honors at 1-under par 143 with one round remaining, only three shots off the pace set by Old Dominion's Jana Melichova (140). The freshman from San Antonio opened with a 1-over 73 that featured four birdies, including three straight on Nos. 16-18. She came back in the afternoon with a 2-under 70 that included six more of her tournament-high 10 birdies.
 
Hannah Holzmann and Nicole Polivchak are part of a four-way tie for sixth place at 4-over 148. Holzmann, a sophomore from San Antonio, turned in a pair of 74s behind a trio of birdies in each round. Polivchak, a junior from Sarasota, Fla., wrote down three birdies as part of an even-par 72 in the morning before posting a 76 in the second round.
 
Madison Kidd is deadlocked with three other players in a tie for 10th at 5-over 149. The senior from Lake Jackson had three birdies in an opening-round 75 before registering a 74 behind 16 of her team-best 26 pars in the afternoon.
 
Ana Gonzalez rounds out the UTSA lineup in 14th place at 6-over 150. The junior from Mexico had all four of her first-day birdies as part of a 73 in the morning before turning in a 77 in the second round.
 
Playing as an individual, Katia Mexsen is tied for 24th after posting rounds of 79 and 77.
 
The final round is slated for a 9 a.m. shotgun start. Admission is free.
