SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA women's basketball team dropped a 43-62 decision to Old Dominion Thursday evening at the Convocation Center.
The Roadrunners (6-15, 2-8 C-USA) started the game strong, keeping up with the Monarchs (19-3, 9-1 C-USA). Old Dominion went up by five (11-6) at the 5:56 mark. Mikayla Woods made the first Roadrunner 3-pointer of the game to bring UTSA within two with 5:06 remaining. Shannan Mitchell tied the game with a layup and at the 1:44 mark, Karrington Donald made a jump shot to take the lead (16-15). ODU tied the game at 16 with a free throw and scored three more points to lead 19-16 after the first.
In the second quarter, the Monarchs went on a 6-0 run to push their lead to nine (25-16). UTSA hit a scoring drought until Charlene Mass made a layup after Woods stole the ball. Both teams then hit a scoring drought until Karley Larson hit a 3-pointer with 2:42 remaining as the Roadrunners trailed by 10, 21-31. The Monarchs made a layup and Woods recorded two free throws to close out the first half. UTSA trailed 23-33 going to the locker room.
UTSA scored six points in the first two and a half minutes of the third quarter before allowing a 10-0 run from ODU as the Monarchs increased the lead (46-29). In the final three minutes, UTSA went on a 6-5 run as the Monarchs led 35-51 at the end of the quarter. In the final 10 minutes, ODU outscored UTSA 11-8 to hold onto the lead and take the win.
