UTSA ties for fourth place at Border Olympics

LAREDO, Texas — Christian Fanfelle posted his fourth top-20 finish of the season to lead the UTSA men's golf team to a tie for fourth place at the Border Olympics on Tuesday at Max Mandel Golf Course (par 72/7,220 yards).
 
Fanfelle tied for 15th with a 2-over-par 218 to help the Roadrunners share fourth place with Campbell and No. 35 Houston at 5-over 869. UTSA fired rounds of 284-286 and 299 to end up eight shots ahead of Lamar and just four behind third-place Sam Houston State, which featured individual medalist Noah Steele (207). ULM came from behind to capture the team title with an 861 ahead of runner-up and No. 49 Arkansas State (863) in the 17-team field that saw the top six teams separated by a mere eight strokes.
 
After opening the 54-hole event with a 5-under 67 on Monday morning, Fanfelle followed with an even-par 72 for the second 18 holes before turning in a 79 on Tuesday. The San Antonio product saw his final round highlighted by a birdie on the par-4 fourth hole to give him a team-high 11 birdies for the week. The 15th-place showing marked the fourth top-20 finish of his sophomore season and the seventh of his young career.
 
Chad Sewell ended up one shot behind his teammate in a tie for 20th with a 219. The Conroe native posted his second 1-under 71 of the tournament on Tuesday on the strength of a pair of birdies and an eagle that came on the 417-yard, par-4 16th hole. The junior now has registered two straight and eight overall top-20 finishes during his UTSA career.
 
One shot separated Adam House from his junior teammate, as the senior from Rockwall carded a 220 to share 26th place. House carded rounds of 74 and 71 before turning in a 75 that was headlined by a birdie on the 619-yard, par-5 seventh hole on Tuesday.
 
Collin Clark was one shot behind his fellow senior in a tie for 32nd with a 221. The Mansfield native followed rounds of 72 and 73 with a 76 that included a birdie on No. 7 in the final round.
 
Hunter Bott rounded out the UTSA lineup in a tie for 55th with a 226 (79-70-77).
 
Competing as an individual, Will Adams tied for 35th with a 222 (75-71-76).
 
The Roadrunners will return to the course on March 16-17 at the Louisiana Classics in Lafayette.
