LAREDO, Texas — The UTSA men's golf team is in second place behind Christian Fanfelle, who has sole possession of third, after the first two rounds of the Border Olympics on Monday at Max Mandel Golf Course (par 72/7,220 yards).
The Roadrunners carded rounds of 284 and 286 for a 36-hole total of 6-under-par 570, just five shots behind day-one leader Sam Houston State's 565 with 18 holes left to play on Tuesday. UTSA is two strokes ahead of ULM (572), eight better than No. 49 Arkansas State (578) and 12 in front of 35th-ranked Houston (582) in the 17-team field.
Fanfelle is in third after posting a 5-under 139, four shots off the pace set by Sam Houston State's Noah Steele, the 75th-ranked player in the country. The sophomore opened the two-day tournament with a 5-under 67 that featured six birdies and an eagle on the 543-yard, par-5 third hole. That marked the second straight event that the San Antonio native started with a 67, which is a collegiate career best and the low round of the season for the Roadrunners.
Fanfelle, who registered his best collegiate finish by tying for seventh at last week's All-American Intercollegiate, came back in the afternoon round with an even-par 72 that was highlighted by four birdies, two on each side. His 10 birdies are the second-best total in the field of 93 players.
Collin Clark and Adam House are part of an eight-way tie for 19th at 1-over 145.
Clark posted a trio of birdies as part of a 72 in his morning round. The senior from Mansfield added three more birdies and an eagle on the 619-yard, par-5 seventh en route to a 73 in the afternoon.
House turned in a 74 on the strength of a birdie on No. 3 in the opening round before the senior from Rockwall posted a 71 that was buoyed by four birdies, two on each side.
Chad Sewell is in a tie for 38th at 4-over 148. The junior from Conroe had three birdies during a 1-under 71 in his first round before recording a 77 in the afternoon.
Hunter Bott is one shot behind Sewell in a tie for 48th at 5-over 149. The freshman from Montgomery bounced back from a 79 with a UTSA-best 2-under 70 in a second round that included four birdies.
Playing as an individual, Will Adams is tied for 27th at 2-over 146. The sophomore from Odessa Permian High School posted a 75 in the opening round before four birdies led to a 1-under 71 in the afternoon.
The final round is scheduled for Tuesday.
