SAN ANTONIO -- A total of 11 UTSA track & field student-athletes earned All-Conference USA accolades, it was announced by the league office on Tuesday afternoon.
The 2020 C-USA Indoor Track & Field All-Conference teams were determined with finishes at the Air Force Reserve Indoor Championships, held in Birmingham last weekend. Individuals placing first in their events were named First Team All-Conference, those placing second in their events were named Second Team All-Conference and those placing third in their events were named Third Team All-Conference.
On the men's side, UTSA had three first-team honorees by virtue of their gold-medal performances, including Bashiru Abdullahi, Andre Douglas and Jack Turner. Grant Szalek earned second-team accolades, while Paul Bouey, Mikael Dawkins and Jake McDaniel were named to the third team.
The UTSA women had four all-league selections including Maia Campbell, who earned first-team and third team accolades after shining in multiple events. Ingeborg Gruenwald, Sigrid Kleive and Danielle Spence each were named third-team All-Conference USA.
A native of Benin City, Nigeria, Abdullahi won the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 7.80 to equal his own school record, set earlier in the year. A two-time C-USA Track Athlete of the Week selection, Abdullahi also ran a 7.80 time at the Charlie Thomas Invitational on Feb. 8 in College Station, Texas.
Douglas, a junior out of Kingston, Jamaica, won the triple jump crown on Sunday in Birmingham. He leaped to a mark of 15.52m (50 feet, 11 inches) to win the gold and become the fourth UTSA athlete to win the event at a conference meet and the first since 2003.
Turner, a freshman from Exeter, England, claimed the men's heptathlon title. He went wire-to-wire as the winner with a two-day total of 5,142. He posted an 8.58 time in the 60m hurdles, had a clearance of 4.20m (13-9.25) in the pole vault and clocked a time of 2:56.92 in the 1,000m. He became the second straight, and seventh overall, Roadrunner to win the league crown in the heptathlon.
A native of Perth, Australia, Szalek was named second team in the high jump. Szalek, a junior, finished second in the high jump with a 2.06m (6-9) measurement to pace four Roadrunners in the top eight in the standings.
Dawkins, a junior out of Leander, was named third-team all-league after claiming the bronze medal in the 60m dash with a time of 6.83.
Campbell pulled down multiple honors, winning the shot-put title to finish first team and placing third in the weight throw to earn a third-team mention. A product of Converse's Judson High School, Campbell posted a career-best mark of 16.12m (52-10.75) on Saturday at the league meet. She registered her personal record on the third of six attempts, becoming UTSA's fourth conference indoor championship in the event and the first in three years. Campbell also placed third in the weight throw on Saturday to earn a third-team accolade.
A junior All-American out of Kingston, Jamaica, Spence skipped to a mark of 12.87m (42-2.75) in the triple jump to claim the bronze medal. She has earned a spot on the podium in the triple jump at all six C-USA Indoor and Outdoor Championships over her career.
The Roadrunners will return to action with the NCAA Indoor Championships, hosted in Albuquerque, N.M., on March 13-14.
