SAN ANTONIO -- After a 10-day stretch without competition, UTSA men's basketball will hit the road for a matchup at Florida Atlantic on Thursday, with tipoff slated for 6 p.m. CT at RoofClaim.com Arena.
The game will be broadcast live on CUSA TV and will be available on the Roadrunners Sports Network, with the Voice of UTSA, Andy Everett, calling the action. Fans can hear the game live on Ticket 760 AM and online at goUTSA.com.
UTSA opens C-USA Bonus Play as a member of the second of three pods and after taking the first week off, the Roadrunners will travel to face FAU (15-13, 7-8 C-USA) on Thursday in Boca Raton, Fla.
It will mark the second meeting between the two schools in 2019-20, both coming at RoofClaim.com Arena. FAU routed UTSA in the league lidlifter for both teams on Jan. 2, holding UTSA to a 34.7 percent clip from the field and limited the nation's No. 2 scorer, Jhivvan Jackson, to just eight points on three made buckets. Keaton Wallace led UTSA with 27 points in the Jan. 2 meeting.
UTSA comes into the C-USA Bonus Play having split each of two games the last two weeks to finish in the second pod and currently sits 10th overall in the league table. UTSA posted a home win over Marshall on Feb. 13, before falling in overtime to WKU on Feb. 15.
The Roadrunners have averaged a league-leading 78.5 points per game in 2019-20, adding a 42.6 percent shooting percentage and a 34.5 percent clip from 3-point range. UTSA has averaged a C-USA leading 39.7 rebounds per game, with 12.7 assists, 12.9 turnovers, 5.9 steals and 2.7 blocks per game. Opponents are shooting 43.8 percent from the field and 33.7 percent from range, scoring 77.3 points per game.
Junior guard Jhivvan Jackson, the nation's No. 2 scorer, leads C-USA with 26.9 points per game. In his last outing, he shattered the UTSA single-season and career scoring records. Jackson adds 6.0 rebounds per game to rank as the nation's No. 2 rebounder among players six-feet and under. He has scored 20 or more points in 24 games and has 30 or more in nine outings.
Junior Keaton Wallace, who combines with Jackson to form the nation's No. 2 scoring duo at 45.9 points per game, averages 19 points and 4.6 rebounds per outing.
Junior forward Luka Barisic ranks third on the team with 6.9 points and 3.0 rebounds per game, while junior guard Knox Hellums adds 5.3 points and 2.1 rebounds per game. Freshman center Jacob Germany, who has started the last five games, averages 5.1 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. Senior forward Atem Bior adds 4.4 points and 4.3 rebounds per game.
Senior forward Byron Frohnen leads the team with 7.1 rebounds per game, adding 3.7 points per outing. Frohnen has made a team-record 127 straight starts to open his career and owns the UTSA school record for career rebounds.
FAU leads the all-time series with UTSA, 6-4 and own a 3-1 record in games played in Boca Raton, Fla. The series began in 2014 with a pair of UTSA wins before the Owls ripped off three straight victories. UTSA has lost three straight in Boca Raton.
The teams met in the C-USA opener on Jan. 2, 2020 in Boca Raton. The Roadrunners were handcuffed throughout the game by the Owls defensively, with UTSA shooting just 34.7 percent from the field and 25 percent from range (9 of 36). FAU shot 44.1 percent and was 9 of 27 from 3-point range. UTSA was led by a 27-point game from Keaton Wallace, with Atem Bior adding three points and nine rebounds. Jhivvan Jackson had his lowest scoring output of the year, going 3 of 18 from the field, and 2 of 9 from 3-point distance, with eight points, five rebounds and five assists in 31 minutes, fouling out. FAU had four players in double figures, including a 15-point, four rebound effort from Jailyn Ingram and a 10-point, eight board game from Everett Winchester.
Florida Atlantic enters C-USA Bonus Play having lost four of their last five games, including a pair with FIU and road outings at Southern Miss and Louisiana Tech. FAU opened the year with a 3-0 league record and a 11-5 overall mark before losing seven of its last nine games. FAU will open bonus play by hosting UAB on Feb. 22. On Saturday, FAU posted a 65-58 win over UAB.
The Owls are averaging 70.2 points per game and holding foes to just 68.4 points per outing, shooting 42.3 percent and 31.7 percent from distance. FAU averages 36.8 rebounds, 12 assists, 13.8 turnovers, 7.2 steals and 2.0 blocks per game as a team.
Cornelius Taylor leads the team with 12.1 points per game, while Jailyn Ingram, an all-league candidate at the wing position, averages 11.0 points and a team-leading 5.2 rebounds per game. Michael Forrest sports 9.1 points and 2.0 rebounds per game, while Richardson Maitre has started all 28games and averages 9.3 points and 4.1 rebounds per outing. Karlis Silins has started 20 of 28 games and averages 7.9 points and 3.5 rebounds per game. Aleksander Zecevic has made nine starts, averaging 6.3 points and 4.4 rebounds, while Evertt Winchester has made nine starts with 4.1 points and 2.8 rebounds per game.
